The 1979 CFL season is considered to be the 26th season in modern-day Canadian football, although it is officially the 22nd Canadian Football League season. Montreal Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes (Canadian French, French: ''Les Alouettes de Montréal'') are a professional Canadian football team based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1946, the team has disbanded twice and been re-established thrice. Willie Armstead (born April 10, 1952) is a former slotback and wide receiver who played seven seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Calgary Stampeders. Larry Key
Larry Key (born July 12, 1956) is a former Canadian Football League (CFL) running back for the British Columbia Lions from 1978 through 1982. He was an All-Star in 1979 and 1981. Key was the first Florida State Seminoles player to rush for 1,000 yards when he gained 1,117 in 1977. His 97-yard run in a 1976 game against VPI is the record for the longest run ever by a Seminole. Key also set four kick return records and was the national leader in all-purpose yardage in 1977. He was inducted into the FSU Football Hall of Fame in 1984. Tom Wilkinson (Canadian Football)
Tom Wilkinson (born January 4, 1943) is an American former professional football quarterback best known for his time with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League, where he played on six Grey Cup-winning teams. He was a Western Conference and CFL all-star quarterback in 1974, 1978 and 1979 and won the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award in 1974. Wilkinson has been inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Early life Wilkinson was born in Iowa and moved to Wyoming with his parents in 1945. Wilkinson played high school football in the small town of Greybull, Wyoming. He was scouted as both a football and baseball player out of high school. Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian
The Dick Suderman Trophy () for the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian is awarded annually to the Canadian player deemed to have the best performance in the Grey Cup game, the championship of the Canadian Football League. This award is presented before the Grey Cup trophy is presented. The winner does not necessarily have to play for the Grey Cup winning team in order to qualify. The award was introduced at the 1971 Grey Cup, and the first winner was Dick Suderman, a Canadian defensive end. A year later, just six weeks before the playing of the 1972 Grey Cup, Suderman collapsed and died from a brain hemorrhage after playing a regular season game; the trophy was subsequently renamed in his honour. Don Sweet
Don Sweet (born July 13, 1948) is a former star football placekicker for the Montreal Alouettes and Montreal Concordes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). College years Sweet graduated from Washington State University in 1971. He was a Pacific-10 Conference all star kicker in 1971. Perhaps his greatest moment happened when WSU upset defending conference champions Stanford 24 to 23 in 1971. His 27-yard game-winning field goal was scored with no time left on the game clock. Sweet had never played football before he tried out for his university team. Professional career In 1972, he began a successful 13-year career with Montreal, the second longest in team history. He played with the Alouettes until 1981 and with the Concordes three more years. He played 185 regular season games, scoring a team record 1,342 points, including 312 field goals and 325 converts. Tom Cousineau
Thomas Michael Cousineau (born May 6, 1957) is an American former professional football player who was a linebacker in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons during the 1970s and 1980s. He played college football for Ohio State University, and twice earned All-American honors. He was the first overall pick of the 1979 NFL draft, and played professionally for the CFL's Montreal Alouettes and the NFL's Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. Cousineau is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, elected in the class of 2016.
