.41 Short
The .41 Short Rimfire, also known as the .41 Short, was first introduced by the National Arms Company in 1863. The .41 Short Rimfire was created with the intention that it be used in a small, single-shot derringer, which likely is the reason for the very low ballistics (most derringers were and are chambered for cartridges that were not originally intended to be used in such a small weapon). Remington Arms began producing their famous Remington Model 95 over/under double barrel derringer chambered for the .41 Short Rimfire in 1866. In 1873, the slightly more powerful .41 Long (rimfire) and the .41 Short Colt (centerfire) was introduced in the Colt New Line pocket revolver. National Arms Company
The National Arms Company was a Brooklyn, New York–based manufacturer of firearms that flourished for a decade in the mid-19th century, around the time of the American Civil War. Among the weapons it manufactured were a derringer that fired the .41 Short (a round it introduced in 1863), and Daniel Moore and David Williamson's Pocket Revolver using the Caliber .32 Teat-fire cartridge (which it made under both the Moore and National Arms marques). The Moore Caliber .32 Teat-fire, which used a unique cartridge to get around the Rollin White patent owned by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson, proved very popular during the Civil War, with both soldiers and civilians. Derringer
A derringer or deringer is a small handgun that is neither a revolver, semi-automatic pistol, nor machine pistol. It is not to be confused with mini-revolvers or pocket pistols, although some later derringers were manufactured with the pepperbox configuration. The modern derringer is often multi barreled, and is generally the smallest usable handgun of any given caliber and barrel length due to the lack of a moving action, which takes up more space behind the barrel. It is frequently used by women because it is easily concealable in a purse or a stocking. Rimfire ammunition (also rim-fire) is a type of metallic cartridge used in firearms where the primer is located within a hollow circumferential rim protruding from the base of its casing. When fired, the gun's firing pin strikes and crushes the rim against the edge of the barrel breech, sparking the primer compound within the rim and igniting the propellant within the case.
