Following several protests in which 105 people died in clashes with the law enforcement agencies, Bombay State was reorganised on linguistic lines into separate states of Maharashtra and Gujarat on 1 May 1960. The Gujarati-speaking areas were separated from Bombay State to form Gujarat. Maharashtra was established with Bombay as its capital was formed with the merger of Marathi-speaking areas of Bombay State, eight districts from Central Provinces and Berar, five districts from Hyderabad State, and numerous princely states. As a memorial to the martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement, Flora Fountain was renamed as Hutatma Chowk (Martyr's Square) and a memorial was erected.
