Voiceverse partnership
On January 14, 2022, Troy Baker announced a partnership with
Voiceverse NFT, which was immediately met with negative reception.
The announcement was particularly controversial due to Baker's confrontational tone, ending his tweet with "You can hate. Or you can create. What'll it be?"
The controversy intensified on the same day when it was discovered that Voiceverse had used voice technology from
15.ai—a free, non-commercial text-to-speech application—without permission or attribution.
Log files revealed that Voiceverse had generated audio using 15.ai's voices from ''
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic'', pitched them up to make them unrecognizable, and then sold them as
NFTs—violating 15.ai's terms of service that explicitly prohibited commercial use and required proper attribution.
When confronted, Voiceverse claimed that someone on their marketing team had used 15.ai's technology without proper attribution because they were rushing to create a partnership demo.
This explanation was met with further criticism from 15.ai's anonymous developer (who responded with "Go fuck yourself") and the broader voice acting community, who raised concerns about AI voice technology's potential impact on the profession.
Following the continued backlash, Baker acknowledged on January 31, 2022, that his original announcement may have been "antagonistic" and announced he would discontinue his partnership with Voiceverse.
