History

Sembawang West SMC was established for the 2025 general election by carving out the majority of the Sembawang West ward of Sembawang GRC, in order to reduce the number of voters in the GRC. At the time of establishment, there were 24,153 registered voters within the SMC. After the SMC was formed,

said he would contest the SMC as Bukit Batok SMC, where he had previously contested, had been absorbed into the newly established Jurong East–Bukit Batok GRC. The National Solidarity Party initially intended to contest the SMC but eventually announced on 20 April that it would not contest there to avoid a three-way fight. On 22 April, Poh Li San, the incumbent MP for the Sembawang West ward, announced her candidacy for the SMC. She proceeded to defeat Chee with 53% of the vote.
