Sub-units

SM's artist roster includes several groups known as "sub-units", which are smaller groups spun-off from their main group and functioning as their own independent band. Some sub-units are formed to target specific markets, languages, genres or performance styles not typically explored by the main group, or due to fan demand because of members' shared chemistry.
