Khan joined the

in 1979. After finishing his PhD at Boston University, he joined UMASS Boston as faculty before returning to government service at the NBR. Subsequently he was a Professor of the department of Economics at

from 1992 to 1995. Dr. Khan was the first CEO of the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and served from 1998 to 2007. He served as Secretary of the Power Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources from 2007 to 2009 and retired from government service that year.
