1993–1998: Early career
In the early 1990s, Madlib formed a loose-knit collective composed of rappers who worked with him in his Oxnard-based Crate Diggas Palace (CDP) studio.

Personal life
In January 2025, it was reported that Madlib's home in Los Angeles was burned down during the January 2025 Southern California wildfires, wildfires affecting the area, with the producer losing "decades of music and equipment" in the process; a Donorbox Crowdfunding, crowdfunding campaign was subsequently started to help him and his family.
