Jhanak

''Jhanak'' is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on StarPlus on 20 November 2023 and streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar. Produced under Magic Moments Motion Pictures, it is a loose adaptation of Star Jalsha's Bengali series ''Jol Nupur''. The series formerly starred Hiba Nawab and Krushal Ahuja. Since June 2025, it stars Riya Sharma and Arjit Taneja. The second generation is a loose adaptation of Star Jalsha's Bengali series ''Ishti Kutum''. The show also features Megha Chakraborty as Ishani in a parallel storyline.

Plot

After her mother's death, Jhanak is forced to marry her cousin Arshi’s fiancé, Aniruddh, to escape from her obsessive stalker, Tejas. Aniruddh and Arshi have been in a happy relationship for seven years. Jhanak, struggling to survive alone, is taken in by Aniruddh and works as a maid at the Bose house, facing constant insults from some family members while others treat her respectfully. Despite Arshi's presence, Jhanak and Aniruddh develop romantic feelings for each other and become intimate in Kashmir while Aniruddh is intoxicated.

When their secret marriage is exposed, Arshi tries to leave Aniruddh, but he and Jhanak convince her to stay. However, their relationship secretly continues, and Jhanak ultimately moves to Mumbai to pursue a dance career, gaining confidence and standing up for herself. She later returns to the Bose House and tells everyone that she is pregnant and Aniruddh is the father. Arshi feels heartbroken. Aniruddh consoles Arshi and asks Jhanak to leave the house. She ultimately proves her enemies right by becoming intimate with Aniruddh. But she was not pregnant—it was a tumour. Aniruddh has a heart attack. Jhanak is targeted by Srishti and Tejas and is presumed dead. Rescued by Brijbhushan’s look-alike, Kulbhushan, she learns that Brijbhushan is her father and uncovers Srishti, Kulbhushan, and Urvashi's deceipt.

Brijbhushan, once betrayed by Srishti, was replaced by Kulbhushan, who stole his identity. Srishti spread lies about Urvashi, forcing her to raise Jhanak alone. Determined to expose the truth, Jhanak returns as Nutan, confronting her enemies. During Srishti and Vinayak’s anniversary, their secrets are revealed. Brijbhushan is later murdered by Kulbhushan, and Aniruddh brings Jhanak back. Wanting to marry her, Aniruddh falsely claims to have cancer, but Jhanak discovers the lie and leaves for Mumbai with Aditya Kapoor.

In Mumbai, Jhanak is kidnapped by Kulbhushan's goons. Aditya was searching for Jhanak. He tells Aniruddh that Jhanak is missing. The Bose family also learns about the same. Later, Kulbhushan meets Jhanak and tells her to sign the property papers. Jhanak runs away from there and Kulbhushan's goons follow Jhanak. On the other hand, Lalon exposes Shubhankar that he was his father's friend and stole all his money. Lalon tells Shubhankar to give all the money. Lalon and Aparajita take over the Bose house and insults Shubhankar, Laal, Bipasha and Tanuja. Later, they both arranges Anjana's birthday party. Mimi and Anirban confesses their love with each other. Jhanak hides in a truck and reaches Gujarat where she meets Vihaan and his son, Ahaan returns from America after his wife Avni died. Vihaan asks Jhanak to act his wife Avni. Later, Jhanak enters Vihaan's house as his wife Avni. Anirban parents came to see Mimi and they final Mimi for Anirban. Jhanak discovers that Aniruddh is Vihaan's best friend. Aniruddh got shocked by seeing Jhanak. Jhanak tells Aniruddh the truth. Kulbhushan was searching for Jhanak. Kulbhushan finds out from his goons that Jhanak is in Gujarat. Aniruddh and Arshi reaches Gujarat for Vihaan's niece, Priyanshi's wedding. On Priyanshi's wedding, Arshi reveals to Parekh family that Jhanak is not Avni, real Avni has died. Later, the Parekh family arrange Jhanak and Vihaan's wedding and Aniruddh and Arshi returns to Kolkata. But Jhanak runs away from the wedding and sits on a bus.

Jhanak falls into a new problem when Jhanak is caught by Kulbhushan's goons in a bus. but she was saved by old man and woman. They both brings Jhanak to Bengal. Later, she finds herself in red light area but she escapes from there but got followed by red light area's goons. She reaches to police station. Later, Choton brings Jhanak to Kolkata in the Bose house leaving the Bose family shocked.

On Arshi's baby shower ceremony, Srishti tells everyone that she is Jhanak's mother and wanted to apologise to her. She tells that she have done wrong things with Jhanak. Later, Kulbhushan searches for Jhanak and learns that Jhanak is in Kolkata. He leaves for Kolkata along with his goons. Later, Lalon's sister, Jhimli runs away with Anindo with 50 lakh rupees and marries her. Anuradha and Lalon break ties with Jhimli. Srishti meets Jhanak and apologises her. She tells Jhanak to come with her home. But, Jhanak refuses to go with her. Meanwhile. Jhimli learns that Anindo is not rich and he bought Jhimli a fake necklace. Arshi makes Jhanak his child's caretaker. The Bose family tortures Jhanak. Jhanak gives a reply to Laal, Tanuja, Shubho. Bipasha and Arshi. Later, Jhimli asks Anindo about the fake necklace and Anindo slaps Jimli.

Jhimli talks badly with Anindo's mother and later Anindo slaps her again. While, Kulbhushan searches for Jhanak. Anuradha, Aparajita and Lalon missing Jhimli. On the other hand, Vihaan blames his mother, Ketki for Jhanak’s runaway. He later discovers from Aniruddh that Jhanak is in Kolkata and decided to take Jhanak and return back to Gujarat. Arshi asks Jhanak when will Jhanak leave the Bose house. Choton and Mrinalini's wedding were being prepared. Vihaan and Ahaan reaches Kolkata. Jhanak blames Arshi for the past days. On haldi ceremony, Srishti tells Aniruddh that he is free to marry Jhanak. Vihaan and Ahaan returns to Gujarat. On the other hand, Anindo locks Jhimli in her room and Jhimli feels guilty for marrying him.

On Choton and Mrinalini's wedding, Arshi falls from the stairs and blames Aniruddh and Jhanak for attending the wedding. While, Kajol, Aparajita and Lalon in a taxi found Lalon and Jhimli in a car. Kajol calls The police and follows both. Anindo decides to sell Jhimli. On the other hand, Arshi admits in a hospital. Later, a desperate father decides to steal Arshi's baby because his wife threaten him if his baby died she will do suicide. The nurses change the babies name. While, The police in disguise and catch Anindo red-handed and arrest him. Jhimli apologises to Lalon. Meanwhile, Srishti and Vinayak were talking about the past. Someone was calling Srishti. She tells Vinayak that a company was calling. While, Jhimli meets Anuradha. Kajol tells her about the situation happened. Jhimli apologises to Aparajita. Vihaan returns Gujarat and blames Ketki for Jhanak’s departure. While, Arshi regains conscious and blames Jhanak for his child's death.

Kulbhushan calls Srishti and enquires her about Jhanak. Srishti tells her about Arshi's child death and also about Jhanak. She also tells Kulbhushan that she was pretending to be good to Jhanak to withdraw the case. Kulbhushan asks Srishti to kill Jhanak. Later, Kulbhushan sends his goons to keep eye on Jhanak to kidnap and kill her. Rumi tells Mimi that baby is stolen by Jhanak but Mimi doesn't believes her. Arshi returns home and tells Jhanak to leave the house. Jhanak tells everyone that Arshi's baby is alive and have been swapped. She decides to find Arshi's baby before leaving house.

During holi celebration, Nandini's first husband and Bipasha's father, Sarveshwar arrives tells everyone the truth revolving around Bipasha and his mother. Laal decides to divorce Bipasha. Bipasha meets Sarveshwar in a cafe and deals with him to take away Jhanak to Banaras. While, Jhanak and Aniruddh talks about their past in a market. In market, Jhanak found Omkar, who stole Arshi's baby. Jhanak decides to expose her. Kajol tells Jimli to forget Anindo and start a new life. Bipasha continues to conspire against Jhanak and decides to send her away from there with Sarveshwar. Jhanak searches for Arshi's baby. Mimi and Anirban meet in a cafe and discuss about the consequences that will come in their wedding Later, Shubho, Tanuja and Arshi files a complaint against Jhanak. While, police arrest Jhanak and Aniruddh goes behind them. Arshi got happy When Jhanak got arrested. Jhanak is later pushed to court. Later, Jhanak tells the judge about his past happened with him.

Both Mimi and Aniruddha come forward to support Jhanak, sharing that Shubho, Tanuja, Arshi and most other members of the Bose family have subjected her to constant mental torment and harassment without any justified reason, since she first arrived at the Bose mansion. They assert that the complaint against Jhanak is entirely unfounded and that the accusations directed at her are completely untrue.

Inspector Sanjay Sarkar has disclosed that certain members of the police, especially inspector Soumendra Roy and his associates deliberately withheld the investigation report from him. As a result, they effectively assisted Shubho, Tanuja, and Arshi in their attempts to frame Jhanak for crimes that she did not commit. Sanjay and police commissioner Kartik Ganguly plan to impose harsh punishments on Soumendra Roy and his associates for their roles in helping Shubho, Tanuja, and Arshi attempt to frame Jhanak.

But unfortunately for Shubho, Tanuja and Arshi, the truth came to light; their efforts to pin crimes on Jhanak were unfounded. There was no substantial evidence linking her to any child trafficking or the death of Arshi's child. As a result, the judge chose to dismiss the case, leaving Shubho, Tanuja, and Arshi deeply frustrated and humiliated.

Production

Development

''Jhanak'' is produced by Leena Gangopadhyay and Saibal Banerjee under Magic Moments Motion Pictures. It is inspired from ''Jol Nupur''.

Casting

Hiba Nawab was cast in the titular role of Jhanak. Krushal Ahuja was cast as Aniruddha Bose opposite Hiba Nawab. Chandni Sharma was cast as Arshi, the parallel lead. Dolly Sohi was cast as Arshi's mother Srishti, while Kajal Pisal was cast as Aniruddh's mother Tanuja. Rishi Kaushik was cast as Tejas, Jhanak's obsessive lover.

In January 2024, Sohi quit the show and was replaced by Poorva Gokhale. In April 2024, Deepali Pansare was cast as Mrinalini, opposite Puneet Panjwani.

Zohaib Siddiqui and Erica Fernandes were approached to play the new leads post the generation leap, but Arjit Taneja and Twinkle Arora were finalized. Krushal Ahuja was replaced by Sumeet Sachdev as the older Anirudh, while Parvati Sehgal took over the role of the older Jhanak, replacing Nawab. Ashlesha Sawant replaced Chandni Sharma.

Filming

The shooting of the series began in September 2023. It was primarily based in Kashmir and Kolkata, and some initial episodes were shot in both locations.

Nawab had learned to row a shikara within two days for the role of Jhanak.

Release

In June 2025, A promo for the 20 year leap was released featuring Riya Sharma and Arjit Taneja as new leads, respectively playing Jhanak and Rishi.
