After the draining of the Haarlemmermeer, two villages, Kruisdorp (Crossvillage) and Venneperdorp (Vennepervillage), were founded in the centre of the

respectively. Hoofddorp became more prosperous than Nieuw-Vennep, and it rapidly became the most important place of the district.
