Gregorios was born in the Cypriot village of

on 28 October 1928. He was the ninth and last child of the builder Theocharis and his wife Maria Hadjitofi. At the age of three, his father died and so he was brought up by his mother and eight older siblings. He recalled in an interview with Hellenic TV in the UK that his father wanted to call him Varanava (Barabbas) (
