Shafiq hails from a Gujarati Muslim family. He is fluent in
Urdu Urdu (; , , ) is an Indo-Aryan languages, Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in South Asia. It is the Languages of Pakistan, national language and ''lingua franca'' of Pakistan. In India, it is an Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of Indi ...
and English, while he can speak Gujarati partly and understands it. In 2023, he resumed his studies, after having to interrupt them due to his professional cricket career, by joining

Shafiq was also part of Pakistan's squad for their Test series in New Zealand. In the first Test, when Pakistan were in trouble at 4/107, Shafiq fought back with Misbah-ul-Haq, the two of them reaching the end of the second day with an unbeaten 128-run partnership. The partnership totaled 149 runs and Shafiq scored 83 runs from 202 balls. Pakistan won the match by 10 wickets, so Shafiq was not required to bat again.
