Organoiodine compounds are prepared by numerous routes, depending on the degree and regiochemistry of iodination sought as well as the nature of the precursors. The direct iodination with is employed with unsaturated substrates: :RHC=CH2 + I2 → RHIC-CIH2 However, the reaction proceeds slowly with unstrained alkenes. This reaction is used to determine the iodine number, an indicator of the unsaturation of fats and related samples.
