Wokeness
''Woke'' is an adjective derived from African-American English used since the 1930s or earlier to refer to awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination, often in the construction ''stay woke''. The term acquired political connotations by the 1970s and gained further popularity in the 2010s with the hashtag ''#staywoke''. Over time, ''woke'' came to be used to refer to a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and denial of LGBTQ rights. ''Woke'' has also been used as shorthand for some ideas of the American Left involving identity politics and social justice, such as white privilege and reparations for slavery in the United States. During the 2014 Ferguson protests, the phrase ''stay woke'' was popularized by Black Lives Matter (BLM) activists seeking to raise awareness about police shootings of African Americans. Woke Capitalism
Corporate sociopolitical activism (CSA) refers to a firm's public demonstration of support or opposition to a partisan sociopolitical issue. CSA has become increasingly prominent in the 2010s and 2020s, as firms have taken stances on issues such as climate change, racial justice, reproductive rights, gun control, immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and gender equality. Several terms, such as woke capitalism, woke capital, and stakeholder capitalism, are used by some commentators to refer to a form of marketing, advertising, and corporate structures that pertains to sociopolitical standpoints tied to social justice and activist causes. The term was coined by columnist Ross Douthat in "The Rise of Woke Capital", an article written for and published in ''The New York Times'' in 2018. Wide Awakes
The Wide Awakes were a youth organization and later a paramilitary organization cultivated by the Republican Party during the 1860 presidential election in the United States. Using popular social events, an ethos of competitive fraternity, and even promotional comic books, the organization introduced many to political participation and proclaimed itself as the newfound voice of younger voters. The structured militant Wide Awakes appealed to a generation which had been profoundly shaken by the partisan instability in the 1850s, and offered young northerners a much-needed political identity.
