Universiade
The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a Blend word, portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students. In July 2020 as part of a new branding system by the FISU, it was stated that the Universiade was to be officially branded as the FISU World University Games. The most recent summer event was the 2021 Summer World University Games held in Chengdu, China from 28 July – 8 August 2023, after being postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China, COVID-19 pandemic. 2021 Summer World University Games
The 2021 Summer World University Games ( zh, , s=2021年夏季世界大学生运动会, labels=no), officially known as the XXXI Summer World University Games and also known as Chengdu 2021, was a multi-sport event sanctioned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), held from 28 July to 8 August 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. It was the fourth time the Games was hosted in China. This is the first time the Games was referred to as the "Summer World University Games" rather than the "Summer FISU World University Games, Universiade." The Games were originally scheduled to be held between 16 and 27 August 2021. On 2 April 2021, it was announced that the Games would be postponed to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the postponement of the 2020 Summer Olympics to 2021 for the same reason. 2025 Winter World University Games
The 2025 FISU Winter World University Games, also known as the XXXII Winter World University Games, or the 32nd Winter Universiade, and commonly known as Turin 2025 or Torino 2025, was a multi-sport event for student and youth athletes, held between 13–23 January 2025, in Turin, Italy. The Piedmont, Piedmontese capital was confirmed as the host city for the games on 15 May 2021. This was the 12th time that the World University Games had been held in Italy, the 7th time that the Winter Games were held in Italy, and the 2nd time in the city, as the city previously hosted the 2007 Winter Universiade, 2007 Games. International University Sports Federation
The International University Sports Federation (FISU; ) is responsible for the organization and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 25. It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organizations and currently has 165 member associations (National University Sport Federations) from five continents. Between 1949 and 2011, it was based in Brussels (Belgium); it was relocated to Lausanne (Switzerland) since 2011. The FISU stages its events every two years. They currently include three World University Games (beach,summer and winter) and 34 World University Championships. It also organizes conferences, forums and seminars to promote sport as a component of the educational system. 2023 Summer World University Games
The 2023 FISU Summer World University Games (Universiade), officially known as the 2023 Summer Universiade or the XXXII Summer World University Games, and commonly known as Yekaterinburg 2023 or Ekaterinburg 2023, was planned to be the 32nd edition of the event, which was to be held from 19 to 31 July 2023 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. On 29 April 2022, FISU "suspended" Yekaterinburg's hosting rights for the Games due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, stating that its hosting of the Games may be "postponed to a later date". In May 2022, FISU postponed the 2021 Summer World University Games in Chengdu, China by one more year to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Multi-sport Event
A multi-sport event is an organized sporting event, often held over multiple days, featuring competition in many different sports among organized teams of athletes from (mostly) nation-states. 1939 International University Games (Vienna)
An International University Games () was an international multi-sport event held between 20 and 27 August 1939 in Vienna, German Reich (now Vienna, Austria), which had originally been scheduled as the official 1939 staging of the Summer International University Games awarded to Vienna by the Confederation Internationale des Etudiants (CIE) in January 1938, prior to Austria's absorption into Nazi Germany by the Anschluss. The National Socialist German Students' League (NSDStB) withdrew from the CIE in May 1939, and the CIE at short notice moved its version of the 1939 International University Games to Monte Carlo. The formal opening was by Bernhard Rust, the Reich Minister of Science, Education and Culture, on 20 August in the Prater Stadium, the main venue of the games.
