Torte
A torte (; from (), in turn from Latin language, Latin via ) is a rich, usually Layer cake, multilayered, cake that is filled with whipped cream, buttercreams, mousses, Fruit preserves#Jam, jams, or fruit. Tortes are commonly baked in a springform pan. Sponge cake is a common base, but a torte's cake layers may instead be made with little to no flour, using ingredients such as ground Nut (fruit), nuts or breadcrumbs. Ordinarily, the cooled torte is Icing (food), glazed and Garnish (food), garnished. Origin The best-known of the typical tortes include the Austrian Sachertorte and Linzertorte, the German Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, and the many-layered Hungarian Dobos torte. Sachertorte ( , ; ) is a chocolate sponge cake covered with chocolate glaze, with an interior layer of apricot jam either under the glaze or in the middle of two sponge layers. The cake was invented by Franz Sacher, either in 1832 for Austrian chancellor Klemens von Metternich, or perhaps in the 1840s. The cake is served at Hotel Sacher and Demel pastry shop in Vienna. In the 20th century, they battled over the cake's ownership and whether the cake should have one or two layers of sponge. Esterházy torta is a Hungarian cake (torte) named after Prince Paul III Anton Esterházy de Galántha (1786–1866), a member of the Esterházy dynasty and diplomat of the Austrian Empire. It was invented by Budapest confectioners in the late 19th century and soon became one of the most famous cakes in the lands of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Black Forest gateau, ( , ) or Black Forest cake, is a layer cake made out of cocoa powder, cherries, ''Kirsch'', and whipped cream, with dark chocolate as a decoration.
