Sōsaku-hanga
was an art movement of woodblock printing which was conceived in early 20th-century Japan. It stressed the artist as the sole creator motivated by a desire for self-expression, and advocated principles of art that is "self-drawn" (自画 ''jiga''), "self-carved" (自刻 ''jikoku'') and "self-printed" (自摺 ''jizuri''). As opposed to the parallel ''shin-hanga'' ("new prints") movement that maintained the traditional ''ukiyo-e'' collaborative system where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor. The birth of the ''sōsaku-hanga'' movement was signaled by Kanae Yamamoto's (1882–1946) small print ''Fisherman'' in 1904. Kōshirō Onchi
, born in Tokyo, was a Japanese print-maker. He was the father of the '' sōsaku-hanga'' movement in twentieth century Japan, and a photographer. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Biography Onchi came from an aristocratic family that had close connections with the imperial family. As a child, he received the same kind of education that a prince received. Onchi was trained in both traditional calligraphy and modern western art. After contacts with Takehisa Yumeji in 1909,Jinbo, "Onchi Kōshirō". between 1910 and 1915, he studied oil painting and sculpture at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (, ''Tōkyō Bijutsu Gakkō''). Kanae Yamamoto (, Yamamoto Kanae , 24 October 1882 – 8 October 1946) was a Japanese artist, known primarily for his prints and ' Western-style paintings. He is credited with originating the ' ("creative prints") movement, which aimed at self-expressive printmaking, in contrast to the commercial studio systems of ukiyo-e and '. He initiated movements in folk arts and children's art education that continue to be influential in Japan. Ukiyo-e
is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock printing, woodblock prints and Nikuhitsu-ga, paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; Flora of Japan, flora and Wildlife of Japan#Fauna, fauna; and Shunga, erotica. Shin-hanga
was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, that revitalized the traditional '' ukiyo-e'' art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th–19th century). It maintained the traditional ''ukiyo-e'' collaborative system (''hanmoto'' system) where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor, as opposed to the parallel '' sōsaku-hanga'' (creative prints) movement. Maki Haku
is the artistic name of Maejima Tadaaki, who was born in Ibaraki Prefecture. He was a '' sōsaku-hanga'' artist in 20th Century Japan. During World War II, Maejima Tadaaki was trained as a kamikaze pilot in the Japanese air force, but the war ended before he was assigned a mission. Haku had no formal art training, but studied for two years with the '' sōsaku-hanga'' artist Onchi Kōshirō (1891–1955). Two unique qualities of Maki Haku prints are the textures achieved by working the designs in wet cement and the use of Kanji (Chinese characters) as design motifs. In 1962, he started adding texture to his prints. At first, he added texture to the entire sheet after it was printed. In 1965, he began embossing designs into unprinted paper by using a press to transfer a design created in cement on a carved plywood board, and then adding color with stencils. Sadao Watanabe (artist)
, born and raised in Tokyo, was a Japanese printmaker. Watanabe was famous for his biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. As a student of the master textile dye artist Serizawa Keisuke (1895–1984), Watanabe was associated with the mingei (folk art) movement. Early life Watanabe's father died when he was ten years old. He dropped out of school at an early age and became an apprentice in a dyer's shop. A Christian woman in his neighborhood invited the fatherless boy to attend church with her. Kiyoshi Saitō (artist)
was a '' sōsaku-hanga'' artist in 20th-century Japan. In 1938, he issued his first prints in his now famous "Winter in Aizu" series. Saitō was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951. Saitō's early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of realism and three-dimensionality. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition. His prints feature architecture and plant life flattened in two-dimensionality. Saito's work is known for fusing artistic Eastern and Western ideas and styles. ''Japonisme'' is a French term that refers to the popularity and influence of Japanese art and design among a number of Western European artists in the nineteenth century following the Bakumatsu, forced reopening of foreign trade with Japan in 1858. Japonisme was first described by French art critic and collector Philippe Burty in 1872.
