Surfing at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place 27 July – 5 August 2024 in Teahupoʻo, Teahupoʻo reef pass, Tahiti, French Polynesia, breaking the record for the farthest away a medal competition has been staged from the host city. A total of 48 surfers (24 for the men's and women's competitions each) competed in the shortboard events, eight more than in 2020 Summer Olympics, Tokyo 2020. Venue The surfing competition was staged in Teahupo'o, Tahiti, in the French overseas collectivity of French Polynesia in the southern Pacific. The decision was made to hold the surfing competition in the French territory instead of continental Europe because of the famous massive waves on the island suitable for the surfing competitions. L'Île-Saint-Denis
L'Île-Saint-Denis (; ) is a French commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, Île-de-France. It is located from the centre of Paris. Surfing At The 2023 Pan American Games
Surfing competitions at the 2023 Pan American Games are scheduled to be held between October 24 and 30, 2023 at Punta de Lobos beach in the Pichilemu commune of Chile. 8 medal events are scheduled to be contested (four per each gender). A total of 88 surfers will qualify to compete at the games. The longboard event will be used as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Qualification A total of 88 surfers will qualify across various qualification tournaments. The host nation Chile, will be automatically be allocated ten quota spots across the eight events. In the shortboard category, a country can enter two athletes, with a maximum one in all other categories. A country can enter a maximum ten surfers (five per gender). An athlete can only qualify one quota for their country. Johanne Defay
Johanne Defay (born 19 November 1993) is a French professional surfer. She was born in Le Puy-en-Velay in the Auvergne region of France. She qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games where she won bronze. She began surfing at the age of 8 off the beaches of Reunion Island, which is her home today. After Johanne's first competition when she was only ten years old, she quickly moved through the European amateur ranks to eventually take on the WSL World Qualifying Series. In 2008 Defay almost gave up competing. She was finding it difficult to transition from the juniors to the WQS and then the economy crashed causing many surf companies cancel their sponsorships. At that time, Johanne found herself without sponsors and also without decent results. Tatiana Weston-Webb
Tatiana "Tati" Guimarães Weston-Webb (born May 9, 1996) is a Brazilian surfer based in Kauai, Hawaii. She is also both American and English. She was the only rookie on the professional surfing World Championship Tour in 2015. Weston-Webb wears jersey number 9, and her 2016 'CT rank is number 4. She competed in both the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics for Brazil, winning silver in the latter and because of that she became the first woman surfer from Brazil to win a medal at the Olympics. Caroline Marks (born February 14, 2002) is an American professional surfer. She is the 2023 World Surf League Women's World Tour Champion and an Olympic gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She has won multiple national championships and is the youngest woman to compete in a World Surf League event. Marks is the youngest surfer to qualify for the women's Championship Tour. She competed in the elite (top 16) of the World Surf League and ended 2018 season in 7th place, earning Rookie of the Year. She lives in San Clemente, California. Gabriel Medina Pinto Ferreira (born 22 December 1993) is a Brazilian professional surfer. He won the 2014, 2018 and 2021 WSL World Championships. In two appearances at the Olympic surfing tournament, Medina won a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. In 2009, at age 15, Medina became the youngest surfer ever to win a major Qualifying Series event. Jack Robinson (born 27 December 1997) is an Australian professional surfer who competes on the World Surf League Men's Championship Tour. He was crowned surfer of the year twice at the Australian Surfing Awards in 2020 and 2021. Robinson is often considered to one of the best barrel riders of the current days. Kauli Vaast (born 26 February 2002) is a French professional surfer from French Polynesia. He qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games, where he won the gold medal in the men's competition. Early life Vaast was born in the town of Vairao on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. He has two younger siblings, a sister and a brother. His sister, Aelan, is also a professional surfer. Surfing At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Women's Shortboard
The women's shortboard competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was held from 25July to 5August at the Teahupo'o reef pass, Tahiti, a French overseas territory in the French Polynesia, located more than from Paris.
