''Benjamin Harrison'' is a public artwork by American artist Charles Henry Niehaus, located in University Park (Indianapolis, Indiana), University Park in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It is a full-length bronze sculptural portrait of Benjamin Harrison, the List of presidents of the United States, 23rd president of the United States, the only U.S. president from Indiana. Description The sculpture was designed by Henry Bacon, sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus, and cast by Gorham Manufacturing Company. The statue was dedicated October 27, 1908. The statue was partially funded by a benefit held at the English's Opera House, English Opera House in 1902. The sculpture depicts Benjamin Harrison standing before a draped, Greek style chair. He wears an open overcoat with one hand upraised and one hand holding gloves. Niehaus found that a lifelike depiction of the president, seated, would not be flattering. Charles Henry Niehaus
Charles Henry Niehaus (January 24, 1855 – June 19, 1935) was an American sculptor. Early life and education Niehaus was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to German parents. He began working as a marble and wood carver, and then gained entrance to the Art Academy of Cincinnati, McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, Royal Academy in Munich, Germany (1877–1881). The effect of the German study was that he retained much of the Neo-Classical flavor in his art while most other sculptors of his generation were drawn towards Beaux-Arts realism. Career He returned to America in 1881. By virtue of being a native Ohioan, he was commissioned to sculpt two statues of the recently assassinated President James Garfield; Statue of James A. Garfield (Cincinnati), one for Cincinnati (Garfield's home city), and Statue of James A. Garfield (U.S. Capitol), the other, in another pose, for the National Statuary Hall Collection at the United States Capitol. ...
