Spanish Slug
The Spanish slug (''Arion vulgaris'', but formerly widely referred to as ''Arion lusitanicus'' owing to a misidentification) is an air-breathing land slug, a terrestrial molluscs, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc, mollusk in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. Other vernacular names are Lusitanian slug, Iberian slug, and killer slug. It is a large, conspicuous slug, which has spread across much of Europe since the 1950s and now reached North America. It may attain high densities and be a serious horticultural and agricultural pest, and is considered an invasive species. The life cycle is annual, with adults appearing in summer and dying off before winter. Confusion over nomenclature The Spanish slug was identified as ''Arion lusitanicus'' when it was first reported as an invading species in France in 1956, and hence it is sometimes called the Lusitanian slug (e.g.). Alfred Moquin-Tandon
Christian Horace Benedict Alfred Moquin-Tandon (7 May 1804 – 15 April 1863) was a French Natural history, naturalist and doctor. Moquin-Tandon was professor of zoology at Marseille from 1829 until 1833, when he was appointed professor of botany and director of the botanical gardens at Toulouse. In 1850, he was sent by the French government to Corsica to study the island's flora. In 1853, he moved to Paris, later becoming director of the Jardin des Plantes and the Académie des Sciences. His books included the ornithology section of ''L'Histoire Naturelle des Iles Canaries'' (1835–44), co-authored with Philip Barker Webb and Sabin Berthelot. Arion (; ) was a kitharode in ancient Greece, a Dionysus, Dionysiac poet credited with inventing the dithyramb. The islanders of Lesbos Island, Lesbos claimed him as their native son, but Arion found a patron in Periander, tyrant of Ancient Corinth, Corinth. Although notable for his musical inventions, Arion is chiefly remembered for the fantastic myth of his kidnapping by pirates and miraculous rescue by dolphins, a folklore, folktale motif. Origins Arion was a native of Methymna in Lesbos, and, according to some mythological accounts, a son of Cyclon or of Poseidon and the nymph Oncaea. All traditions about him agree in describing him as a contemporary and friend of Periander, tyrant of Corinth.
