Robot combat is a type of robot competition in which custom-built machines fight using various methods to incapacitate each other. The machines have generally been Radio-controlled car, remote-controlled vehicles rather than autonomous robots. Robot combat competitions have been made into television series, including ''Robot Wars (TV series), Robot Wars'' in the United Kingdom and ''BattleBots'' in the United States. These shows were originally broadcast in the late 1990s to early 2000s and experienced revivals in the mid-2010s. As well as televised competitions, smaller robot combat events are staged for live audiences such as those organized by the Robot Fighting League. Robot builders are generally hobbyists and the complexity and cost of their machines can vary substantially. Robotica (TV Series)
''Robotica'' is a robot combat show (similar to the early seasons of ''Robot Wars'') produced for the American television cable channel TLC, a subsidiary of the Discovery Channel, from April 4, 2001, to November 16, 2002. Ahmet Zappa and Tanya Memme hosted all three seasons while Tanika Ray only hosted the first season with Dan Danknick replacing her for the second and third seasons. Kuratas is a rideable and user-operated mecha built by the Japanese company Suidobashi Heavy Industry. Billed as "the world's first giant boarding robot", the Kuratas was unveiled when the website was opened in 2012. It was demonstrated at Wonder Festival. MegaBots Inc. was an American startup company headquartered in Hayward, California that created giant robots and real-world mecha for robotic sports competitions. In June 2015, MegaBots challenged Japan-based Suidobashi Heavy Industry to the world's first giant robot duel. Suidobashi accepted the challenge on the condition that the fight include melee combat. In 2017, the company premiered a scripted version of the duel on Twitch TV, which ended in victory for the MegaBots team. In 2019, Matt Oehrlein declared MegaBots had run out of money. ''Robot Combat League'' (''RCL'') is a U.S. television show on the Syfy network about robot fighting competitions. On the show, teams use exosuits to control fighting robots. The last RoboGames was held April 6-9, 2023 in Pleasanton, California, having been on hiatus since the previous event in April 2018. Competitions typically involve entrants representing a large selection of countries, who compete in over fifty categories, such as autonomously navigating robots in robomagellan, RoboMagellan, combat robots, stair-climbing, weight-lifting, soccer robot, soccer bots, sumo bots, and kung-fu.
