Rigole De La Plaine
The critical feature of the Canal du Midi was to provide sufficient water to ensure that the lock system continued to function, even through the summer months. The first part of this endeavor was the ''rigole de la plaine'' (). It carried water from the Sor River, at Pontcrouzet, to the Bassin de Naurouze, where the water was to enter the Canal du Midi, canal. This was done in 1667. In 1668 Pierre-Paul Riquet, Riquet built a loading basin, near Revel,_Haute-Garonne, Revel, on the rigole de la plaine between Pont Crouzet, on the river Sor, and Bassin_de_Naurouze, Naurouze, called Port Louis. The feeder between this point and Bassin_de_Naurouze, Naurouze was expanded in order for boats to ferry stones. Fourteen locks were put in place. In 1669 Pierre-Paul Riquet, Riquet widened the rigole de la plaine enough to support navigation. It was opened to traffic in 1670 from Revel,_Haute-Garonne, Revel, to Bassin_de_Naurouze, Naurouze. Pierre Borel had the original idea for this feat ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   [Amazon] |

Canal Du Midi
The Canal du Midi (; ) is a long canal in Southern France (). Originally named the ''Canal Royal en Languedoc'' (Royal Canal in Languedoc) and renamed by French revolutionaries to ''Canal du Midi'' in 1789, the canal is considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century. The canal connects the Garonne to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and, along with the long Canal de Garonne, forms the Canal des Deux Mers, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Strictly speaking, ''"Canal du Midi"'' refers to the portion initially constructed from Toulouse to the Mediterranean – the Deux-Mers canal project aimed to link together several sections of navigable waterways to join the Mediterranean and the Atlantic: first the Canal du Midi, then the Garonne which was more or less navigable between Toulouse and Bordeaux, then the Garonne Lateral Canal built later, and finally the Gironde estuary after Bordeaux. Jean-Baptiste Colbert authorized the start ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   [Amazon] |
