The rainbow flag or pride flag (formerly gay pride flag) is a LGBT symbols, symbol of LGBT pride, LGBTQ pride and LGBTQ movements, LGBTQ social movements. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBTQ community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender. Using a rainbow flag as a symbol of LGBTQ pride began in San Francisco, California, but eventually became common at LGBT rights by country or territory, LGBTQ rights events worldwide. Originally devised by the artists Gilbert Baker (artist), Gilbert Baker, Lynn Segerblom, James McNamara and other activists, the design underwent several revisions after its debut in 1978, and continues to inspire variations. Although Baker's original rainbow flag had eight colors, from 1979 to the present day the most common variant consists of six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Gilbert Baker (June 2, 1951 – March 31, 2017) was an American artist, designer, activist, and Vexillography, vexillographer, best known as the creator of the Rainbow flag (LGBT), rainbow flag. Biography Baker was born on June 2, 1951, in Chanute, Kansas. He grew up in Parsons, Kansas, where his grandmother owned a women's clothing store. His father was a judge and his mother was a teacher. He was baptized a Methodist. Baker served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972. He was stationed as a medic in San Francisco at the beginning of the LGBT social movements, gay rights movement and lived there as an openly gay man. After his honorable discharge from the military, he worked on the first marijuana legalization initiative, California Proposition 19 (1972), and was taught to sew by his fellow activist, Mary Dunn.
