Plyometrics
Plyometrics, also known as jump training or plyos, are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power (speed-strength). This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid or "explosive" manner, such as in specialized repeated jumping. Plyometrics are primarily used by athletes, especially martial artists, sprinters and high jumpers, to improve performance, and are used in the fitness field to a much lesser degree. Overview Plyometrics include explosive exercises to activate the quick response and elastic properties of the major muscles. Michael Yessis
Michael Yessis (June 16, 1932 – September 15, 2023) was an American sports performance trainer who translated and adapted sports training methodology from the former Soviet Union. Biography Michael Yessis earned a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. In 1975, he and athlete Fred Wilt coined the term plyometrics while observing Soviet athletes warming up. In 1982, Yessis traveled to the Soviet Union to work with Yuri Verkhoshansky, a biomechanist and sports trainer. Yessis' teaching career focused on a performance-based version of sports conditioning and training. Yessis authored 16 books and over 2,000 articles in various publications. He also appeared on television, radio, and the internet as an expert guest and commentator.
