Penny (Australian)
The Australian penny was a coin of the Australian pound, which followed the £sd system. It was used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation in 1966. One Australian penny was worth Australian shilling, Australian florin, Australian crown, and Australian pound. The coin was equivalent in its dimensions and value to the British pre-decimal penny, as the two currencies were originally fixed at par. The coin was introduced in 1911, while the last penny was minted in 1964. After decimalisation on 14 February 1966 the penny was equal to 0.8333 cents. The obverse of the coin featured the reigning Australian monarch. Three were featured: George V, George VI and Elizabeth II. All of the pennies bearing George VI and Elizabeth II had a kangaroo on the reverse. Australian One-cent Coin
The cent (in circulation 1966–1992), formally the one-cent coin, was the lowest-denomination coin of the Australian dollar. It was introduced on 14 February 1966 in the decimalisation of Australian currency and was withdrawn from circulation in 1992 (along with the two-cent coin). It is still minted as a non-circulating coin. A one-cent coin in 1966 would have a purchasing power equal to about 16c in 2023 values. One-cent and two-cent coins are legal tender only up to the sum of 20 cents (preventing large debts from being paid in small coins). Description From 1966 until 1984 the obverse featured the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin. It was changed in 1985 to a version by Raphael Maklouf, which remained until its withdrawal from circulation in 1992. The Australian Crown was a coin used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalisation in 1966. The denomination was only minted in 1937 and 1938. It was of similar size and weight to the British crown and was made of sterling silver for both its years of production. Like the British Crown, the Australian Crown was worth five shillings (one-quarter of an Australian pound). The Crown was originally intended to commemorate the ascension of King Edward VIII; however, due to his abdication, it was instead struck to commemorate the ascension of King George VI.
