The medial ligament complex of the knee consists of: * '' superficial medial collateral ligament'' (sMCL), also called the ''medial collateral ligament'' (MCL) or ''tibial collateral ligament'' * ''deep medial collateral ligament'' (dMCL), or ''mid-third medial capsular ligament'' * '' posterior oblique ligament'' (POL), or ''oblique fibers of the sMCL'' This complex is the major stabilizer of the medial knee. Medial Patellofemoral Ligament
The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is one of several ligaments on the medial aspect of the knee. It originates in the superomedial aspect of the patella and inserts in the space between the adductor tubercle and the medial femoral epicondyle. The ligament itself extends from the femur to the superomedial patella, and its shape is similar to a trapezoid. It keeps the patella in place, but its main function is to prevent lateral displacement of the patella. Medial Meniscus
The medial meniscus is a fibrocartilage semicircular band that spans the knee joint medially, located between the medial condyle of the femur and the medial condyle of the tibia.Platzer (2004), p 208 It is also referred to as the internal semilunar fibrocartilage. The sartorius muscle () is the longest muscle in the human body. It is a long, thin, superficial muscle that runs down the length of the thigh in the anterior compartment. The gracilis muscle (; Latin for "slender") is the most superficial muscle on the medial side of the thigh. It is thin and flattened, broad above, narrow and tapering below. Structure It arises by a thin aponeurosis from the anterior margins of the lower half of the symphysis pubis and the upper half of the pubic arch.
