Mayor Of Lower Hutt
The city of Lower Hutt, New Zealand, was first proclaimed a borough on 1 February 1891. Prior to this it had been part of Hutt County, initially as a Roads Board and from 1881 as a Town Board. Since 2019, the mayor has been Campbell Barry. History The Hutt County Council was established in 1877, covering the region from Wellington's south coast up to Waikanae, excluding Wellington City. The county council was headed by a chairman rather than a mayor. As the region grew, urban parts of the Hutt County became autonomous boroughs with Lower Hutt becoming its own borough in 1891 with a borough council headed by a mayor to be directly elected by ratepayers. Will Strand
William Thomas Strand (1877 – 10 August 1960) was a New Zealand politician. He was Mayor of Lower Hutt on two occasions. Biography Early life and career Strand was born in 1877 in his family's farm cottage at Boulcott. His father was an early settler to Port Nicholson, originally from Kent. He had no formal education and worked on his family farm growing vegetables and raspberries, which were sold at the market gardens in Taitā. At the age of 19 he left to travel overseas, working on a ship and later at the London docks. He later recounted "That was my university education; I learned not to judge a man by the suit he wears". He returned to the Hutt Valley and became a builder and built two cottages. Henry Baldwin (mayor)
Henry Baldwin (1856 – 30 October 1928) was a British born New Zealand businessman and politician who was Mayor of Lower Hutt and chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board. Biography Baldwin was born in 1856 to a Cockney family in Stepney in London's east end. He came to New Zealand in 1876 and was employed at the retail store Plimmer and Beeves. He went into business for himself as a grain and produce merchant around 1898. He ran his business, H. Baldwin and Co., until he retired in 1923. From 1905 to 1911 he was elected a member of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. In 1911 and 1912 he contested the mayoralty against Edmund Percy Bunny but was defeated. When Bunny retired in 1914 he stood again and was elected Mayor of Lower Hutt on his third attempt ahead of two sitting borough councillors. Thomas Alexander Peterkin (1839 – 12 June 1926) was a British born New Zealand engineer and politician who was mayor of Lower Hutt. Biography Peterkin was born in 1839 in London. He found employment with the London and North Western Railway, later becoming a leading hand. He then emigrated to Victoria, Australia, to become manager of the Vulcan Foundry at Geelong. Three years later he superintended the building of a freezing works at Rockhampton and established a foundry there as well. He then became an engineer overseeing cable work before shifting to New Zealand. In 1876 he was appointed as a railway engineer at Westport, later becoming manager of the Christchurch Tramway Company. Thomas William McDonald (December 1869 – 14 August 1968), sometimes known as Colonel Mac, was a United Party (New Zealand), United Party Member of Parliament in New Zealand. Biography Early life McDonald was born in 1869 in Tasmania. His parents died when he was a child and he had to earn his own living from an early age. Because of this he could not continue to attend school and so was mostly self-educated. Orton Stevens
Orton Stevens (2 February 1865 – 27 May 1914) was a New Zealand businessman and politician. A large man with an imposing frame he was Mayor of Lower Hutt from 1900 to 1905. Biography Stevens was born in 1865 at Forbes in New South Wales. Upon leaving school he gained employment in the insurance industry at the office of the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria, that later amalgamated with the National Mutual Life Assurance Society in 1896. At the time of amalgamation Stevens was appointed as the company's assistant secretary in its Queensland office. In 1898 he was appointed New Zealand manager for National Mutual.
