Mango Cultivars
The following is a list of some prominent mango cultivars. Worldwide, hundreds of mango cultivars are known. Most commercial cultivars belong to ''Mangifera indica'', while a few commercial varieties grown in Southeast Asia belong to other ''Mangifera'' species. Southeast Asia, India, Australia, the United States and some African countries cultivate locally selected varieties, while most other countries grow cultivars developed in Florida. Cultivar
A cultivar is a kind of Horticulture, cultivated plant that people have selected for desired phenotypic trait, traits and which retains those traits when Plant propagation, propagated. Methods used to propagate cultivars include division, root and stem cuttings, offsets, grafting, micropropagation, tissue culture, or carefully controlled seed production. Most cultivars arise from deliberate human genetic engineering, manipulation, but some originate from wild plants that have distinctive characteristics. Cultivar names are chosen according to rules of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), and not all cultivated plants qualify as cultivars. Anderson (mango)
The 'Anderson' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in south Florida. History The original tree was started from a ' Sandersha' mango seed sent from Jamaica in 1926 and was planted on the L. F Anderson's property in Miami, Florida. The tree fruited in 1931 and was named in 1948. A 2005 pedigree analysis estimated that 'Anderson' was a cross between the 'Sandersha' and ' Haden' cultivars. Anderson did not become a popular commercial variety due to the fruit's tendency to split while still on the tree. Its dooryard adaptation was limited as well, though it has been used to make chutneys. 'Anderson' trees are planted in the collections of the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead, Florida as well as the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park, also in Homestead. Appemidi Mango
The 'Appemidi' mango, is a mango cultivar primarily grown in Malenadu region of Karnataka, India. Appe midi is the variation of the same name. Appemidi varieties include Ananta Bhattana, Kanchappa, and Karnakundala. Name The word "Appe midi", translating to "Tender Mango" in the Kannada language, is the king of all tender mangoes for its use in the South Asian pickle industry. Anwar Ratol
Anwar Ratol (sometimes spelt Anwar Rataul) is a small, yellow variety of mango known for its sweetness and fiberlessness. It is sometimes called the 'mini powerhouse'. It is cultivated in the Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan, and near the village of Rataul in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is very sweet in taste with less fiber. History Anwar Ratol was first cultivated near Rataul, a village in Uttar Pradesh. Sheikh Mohd Afaq Faridi, a Muslim farmer returned to the village after completing his inter college in 1905, he noticed a young mango tree near one of the farms. He asked a gardener to graft the plant, and in a year's time, four mango trees sprouted. Years later, Afaq Faridi resigned from his job and devoted his life to this ‘sweet mission’. After his marriage, he set up a mango nursery that he called Shohra-e-afaq in 1928 and got it registered in 1935.
