Geraizeiro
Geraizeiro are the Traditional peoples in Brazil, traditional inhabitants of the Cerrado, cerrados regions of northern Minas Gerais state, in the Southeast Region, Brazil, Southeast region of Brazil. Etymology This term derives from the fact that in the north of this state and in the cerrado regions they are known as ''Gerais'', a contraction of ''Matos Gerais'' (general bushes). The first name of Minas Gerais was ''Capitania das Minas dos Matos Gerais'', that is, Captaincy of the Mines in the General Bushes. "Mines" here refers to the mining of gold and diamond; "general bushes" refers to cerrado and, near the border with Bahia, caatinga.''Geraizeiro'' can also be called ''catrumano'', ''baianeiro'', ''abaianado''. ''Geraizeiro'' is also the name of the Brazilian Portuguese accent in the north of Minas Gerais. The central and east regions of the state speak ''mineiro''. Mineiro (), Mineirês, or the Brazilian mountain accent () is the Portuguese language, Brazilian Portuguese term for the accent spoken in the center, East and Southeast regions of the state of Minas Gerais. Etymology The term is also the demonym of Minas Gerais. Demography It is notable for being spoken in its capital, Belo Horizonte, and its historical cities: Ouro Preto (capital from 1720 until 1897), Mariana, Minas Gerais, Mariana (first major town in Minas Gerais, founded in 1696), Santa Bárbara, Minas Gerais, Santa Bárbara, Sabará, Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Diamantina, Tiradentes, Minas Gerais, Tiradentes, São João del-Rei, Congonhas, Serro, Caeté, Itabira etc. Ten million people, about half of the state's population, speak it.
