Electoral Division Of Nhulunbuy
Nhulunbuy was an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974, and is named after the remote town of the same name. Nhulunbuy is a rural electorate on the Territory's northeast coast, covering and taking in the towns of Nhulunbuy, Galiwinku, Yirrkala and Gapuwiyak. There were 5,895 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2016. The division was abolished in 2020, and replaced by the division of Mulka. Nhulunbuy was traditionally a safe seat for the Labor Party, which held the seat without a break from 1980 to 2016. Labor's dominance in the seat was mostly on the strength of strong support among indigenous voters; more than 50% of the electorate's population was indigenous. The only exception to the ALP's dominance was Milton Ballantyne, who won the seat for the Country Liberal Party in 1974 when the ALP won no seats in the Assembly. Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory
Nhulunbuy () is a town and locality in the far north of the Northern Territory of Australia. Founded on the Gove Peninsula in north-east Arnhem Land when a bauxite mine and deep water port were established in the late 1960s, the town's economy largely revolved around its alumina refinery until it closed in May 2014. The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP), commonly known as the Country Liberals, is a centre-right and conservative political party in Australia's Northern Territory. Yingiya Mark Guyula
Yingiya Mark Guyula () is an Australian politician and a Yolŋu man of the Djambarrpuyŋu clan and the Liya-Dhälinymirr people. He is an independent member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for the seat of Mulka in north-east Arnhem Land. He previously represented Nhulunbuy from 2016 to 2020. He is the only independent Indigenous member of parliament in the Northern Territory and campaigned on a platform of self-determination for Yolŋu people. Lynne Walker (politician)
Lynne Michele Walker (born 19 June 1962) is an Australian politician. She was a Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2008 to 2016, representing the seat of Nhulunbuy. Walker was an outspoken critic of the former Country Liberals' government's management of the closure at the Rio Tinto aluminum refinery. Clare Martin
Clare Majella Martin (born 15 June 1952) is a former Australian journalist and politician. She was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in a shock by-election win in 1995. She was appointed Opposition Leader in 1999, and won a surprise victory at the 2001 territory election, becoming the first Labor Party (ALP) and first female Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. Sydney James Stirling (born 16 December 1951) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 2008. Stirling was born in Kyneton, Victoria, and worked as a teacher before his election to parliament. He challenged for the Labor leadership twice, but was easily defeated. In 1999 he was elected Deputy Leader to Clare Martin, and served as Deputy Chief Minister following the ALP's election win in 2001. The Northern Territory Legislative Assembly is made up of 25 single-member electoral divisions. The ''Electoral Act 2004'' dictates the characteristics of each of these electorates, and requires, among other things, that each electorate has a similar number of eligible voters and that the physical area of an electorate should be kept as small as is practicable. Mulka is an electoral division of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was created in a 2019 redistribution for the 2020 Northern Territory general election, 2020 general election, replacing the electoral division of Nhulunbuy. At that election, independent Nhulunbuy incumbent Yingiya Mark Guyula won the seat in a tightly contested rematch of the 2016 Northern Territory general election, 2016 general election, with the Territory Labor Party being his only opposition.
