Detransition is the cessation or reversal of a transgender identification or of gender transition, temporarily or permanently, through social, legal, and/or medical means. The term is distinct from the concept of 'regret', and the decision may be based on a number of reasons, including a shift in gender identity, health concerns, social or economic pressure such as trans healthcare bans, discrimination, stigma, political beliefs, or religious beliefs. The estimated prevalence of detransition varies depending on definitions and methodology but is generally found to be rare. Some studies use the term retransition rather than detransition, but the term is more commonly used to describe the resumption of transition or transgender identity following a detransition. Conversion therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of attempting to change an individual's sexual orientation, romantic orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to align with heterosexual and cisgender norms. Methods that have been used to this end include forms of brain surgery, surgical or chemical (hormonal) castration, aversion therapy treatments such as electric shocks, nausea-inducing drugs, hypnosis, counseling, spiritual interventions, visualization, psychoanalysis, and arousal reconditioning. Cass Review
The Independent Review of Gender Identity Services for Children and Young People (commonly, the Cass Review) was commissioned in 2020 by NHS England and NHS Improvement and led by Hilary Cass, a retired consultant paediatrician and the former president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. It dealt with gender services for children and young people, including transgender youth and Gender dysphoria in children, those with gender dysphoria in England. The final report was published on 10 April 2024, and it was endorsed by both the Conservative Party (UK), Conservative and Labour Party (UK), Labour parties though LGBT+ Labour criticised it. Feminizing hormone therapy, also known as transfeminine hormone therapy, is a form of gender-affirming care and a gender-affirming hormone therapy to change the secondary sex characteristics of transgender people from masculine to feminine. It is a common type of transgender hormone therapy (another being masculinizing hormone therapy) and is used to treat transgender women and non-binary transfeminine individuals.
