Cracker, sometimes cracka or white cracker, is a List of ethnic slurs, racial slur directed at white people, used especially with regard to Poor Whites, poor rural whites in the Southern United States. Also referred by the euphemistic contraction C-word, it is commonly a pejorative, though is also used in a neutral context, particularly in reference to a native of Florida or Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia (see Florida cracker and Georgia cracker). Origin of the term The exact history and origin of the term is debated. According to one theory, it is an agent noun derived from the verb ''crack'', meaning "to boast". The use of ''cracker'' to mean "braggart" dates back to the 16th century and can be seen for example in William Shakespeare's ''The Life and Death of King John, King John'' (c. 1595): "What cracker is this same that deafs our ears with this abundance of superfluous breath?"
