Common Brown Leafhopper
The common brown leafhopper (''Orosius orientalis'') is one of the most common species of Australian leafhoppers with a very wide host range. It is an important vector of several viruses and phytoplasmas worldwide. In Australia, phytoplasmas vectored by ''O. orientalis'' cause a range of economically important diseases including legume little leaf, tomato big bud, lucerne witches broom, potato purple top wilt, Australian lucerne and the insect is a possible vector of Australian grapevine yellows. Shōnen Matsumura
was a Japanese entomologist. Born in Akashi, Hyōgo, Dr. Shōnen Matsumura established Japan's first course on entomology at Hokkaido University. The courses were both applied (on insects of importance in forestry and agriculture) and theoretical. He named over 1,200 species of Japanese insects and in 1926 he founded the entomological journal ''Insecta Matsumurana.'' Matsumura wrote many scientific papers and books including ''6,000 illustrated Insects of Japan-Empire'' (1931). He died in Tokyo. His collection is in Hokkaido University in Sapporo. Leafhopper
Leafhopper is the common name for any species from the family (biology), family Cicadellidae: based on the type genus ''Cicadella''. These minute insects, colloquially known as hoppers, are plant feeders that suck plant sap from grass, shrubs, or trees. Their hind legs are modified for jumping, and are covered with hairs that facilitate the spreading of a secretion over their bodies that acts as a water repellent and carrier of pheromones. They undergo a partial metamorphosis, and have various host associations, varying from very generalized to very specific. ''Mastrevirus'' is a genus of ssDNA viruses, in the family ''Geminiviridae''. Mostly monocotyledonous plants serve as natural hosts. They are vectored by planthoppers. There are 50 species in this genus. Diseases associated with this genus include: maize streak virus: maize streak disease (MSD). Capsid proteins ''Mastreviruses'' have an unusually diverse range of capsid proteins among the Geminiviridae. ''Geminiviridae'' is a family of plant viruses that encode their genetic information on a circular genome of single-stranded (ss) DNA. The family contains 15 genera.
