The Communes of Burundi are divided into 2,639 collines. ''Colline'' means "hill A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. Communes Of Burundi
The Provinces of Burundi, provinces of Burundi are subdivided into 119 commune (subnational entity), communes. The communes are further subdivided into Collines of Burundi, collines. Burundi’s provinces and communes were created on Christmas Day in 1959 by a Belgian colonial decree. They replaced the pre-existing system of chieftains. In July 2022, the government of Burundi announced a complete overhaul of the country’s territorial subdivisions. The proposed change would reduce the amounts of provinces from 18 to 5, and reduce the amount of communes from 119 to 42. The change were approve by both the National Assembly of Burundi, National Assembly and the Senate (Burundi), Senate. The new territorial subdivisions will take effect with the 2025 parliamentary elections. Burundi is a unitary state which is sub-divided at three levels: provinces, communes, and ''collines'' (hills). Divisions Provinces The largest administrative division in Burundi is the province. There used to be 18 provinces in Burundi, each named after their provincial capital. Each province has a Provincial Governor. The most recent province, Rumonge, was created in 2015. The provincial organisation of Burundi has been reformed on a number of occasions with the newest subdivisions dating in March 2023. With this new administrative subdivision has substantially reduced the number of provinces, communes and hills. The 18 provinces were combined and reduced into 5 provinces.
