The City of Newcastle is a local government area in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. The City of Newcastle incorporates much of the area of the Newcastle metropolitan area. Tasman Sea
The Tasman Sea is a marginal sea of the South Pacific Ocean, situated between Australia and New Zealand. It measures about across and about from north to south. Tarro Shire
Tarro Shire was a local government area in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Tarro Shire was proclaimed (as Kurri Kurri Shire) on 7 March 1906, one of 134 shires created after the passing of the ''Local Government (Shires) Act 1905''. It was renamed Tarro Shire on 8 January 1907. The shire office was in East Maitland. Other towns and villages in the shire included Hexham, Mulbring, Tarro and Sandgate. On 2 April 1938, the '' Greater Newcastle Act 1937'' saw part of Tarro Shire was excised and merged with part of Lake Macquarie Shire and 10 suburban municipalities to form the City of Greater Newcastle. Greater Newcastle Act 1937
Greater Newcastle Act 1937 was a New South Wales statute with the purpose of amalgamating a series of local government areas to create the City of Greater Newcastle. The Act also transferred parts of Lake Macquarie Shire and Tarro Shire to the new city. The amalgamations and transfers took effect from 2 April 1938. The newly created City of Greater Newcastle was subsequently renamed to City of Newcastle on 23 March 1949. Worimi
The Worimi (also spelt Warrimay) people are Aboriginal Australians from the eastern Port Stephens and Great Lakes regions of coastal New South Wales, Australia. Before contact with settlers, their people extended from Port Stephens in the south to Forster/ Tuncurry in the north and as far west as Gloucester. Country The Worimi's lands extended over according to Norman Tindale, who specified that the tribal area encompassed the Hunter River to the coastal town of Forster near Cape Hawke. It reached Port Stephens and ran inland as far as roughly Gresford and in proximity of Glendon Brook, Dungog, and the upper Myall Creek. To the south, their territory extended to Maitland. Awabakal
The Awabakal people , are those Aboriginal Australians who identify with or are descended from the Awabakal tribe and its clans, Indigenous to the coastal area of what is now known as the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Their traditional territory spread from Wollombi in the west, to the Lower Hunter River near Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the north. The name Kuringgai, also written Guringai, has often been used as a collective denominator of the Awabakal and several other tribes in this belt, but Norman Tindale has challenged it as an arbitrary coinage devised by ethnologist John Fraser in 1892. For Tindale, Kuringgai was synonymous with Awabakal. Arthur Capell however asserted that there was indeed evidence for a distinct Kuringgai language, which, in Tindale's schema, would imply they were a distinct people from the Awabakal. 2024 New South Wales Mayoral Elections
The 2024 New South Wales mayoral elections were held on 14 September 2024 to elect mayors or lord mayors to 37 of the 128 local government areas (LGAs) in New South Wales, Australia.
