''Cannabis'' () is a genus of flowering plants in the family Cannabaceae that is widely accepted as being Indigenous (ecology), indigenous to and originating from the continent of Asia. However, the number of species is disputed, with as many as three species being recognized: ''Cannabis sativa'', ''Cannabis indica, C. indica'', and ''Cannabis ruderalis, C. ruderalis''. The Miocene ( ) is the first epoch (geology), geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma). The Miocene was named by Scottish geologist Charles Lyell; the name comes from the Greek words (', "less") and (', "new") and means "less recent" because it has 18% fewer modern marine invertebrates than the Pliocene has.
