Bounce Music
Bounce music is a genre of New Orleans hip-hop music that is said to have originated as early as the late 1980s in the city's housing projects. Popular bounce artists have included DJ Jubilee, Partners-N-Crime, Magnolia Shorty and Big Freedia. Structure Bounce is characterized by call-and-response-style party and Mardi Gras Indian chants and dance call-outs that are frequently hypersexual and controversial. These chants and call-outs are typically rapped over the " Triggerman beat", which is sampled from the songs " Drag Rap" by the Showboys and "Brown Beats" by Cameron Paul. The original recording sampled by Paul was "Rock the Beat" by British rapper Derek B, produced by Simon Harris and released in early 1987 on the Music of Life British hip hop label in the UK. The sound of bounce has primarily been shaped by the recycling and imitation of the Simon Harris produced " Drag Rap" beat: its opening chromatic tics, the intermittent shouting of the word "break", the use ...

New Orleans Hip-hop
New Orleans hip hop represents a distinct regional style, profoundly rooted in the city's unique cultural heritage, particularly its rich African Americans, African American musical traditions. It stands as a significant cultural export of Louisiana. The dominant and most recognizable Music subgenre, subgenre within New Orleans hip hop is bounce music, which emerged in the early 1990s. Bounce is characterized by its intensely Percussion instrument, percussive, highly rhythmic, and dance-centric nature, often featuring Call and response (music), call-and-response vocals and localized references. A notable duality exists in the perception and recognition of New Orleans hip hop: it is simultaneously a highly lucrative cultural export and a genre that has historically faced a degree of Social exclusion, marginalization within its own city's dominant cultural narrative and academic discourse. This has resulted in limitations concerning venue bookings, performance opportunities, and scho ...

Music Of Life
Music of Life is a British independent hip hop and dance music label formed in 1986 by Froggy and Simon Harris, managed by Chris France. At first, the label licensed new rap music from US production company Powerplay for the first compilation album ''Def Beats 1'', but as an addition to the US material, Harris produced an extra track under his own 'Music of Life Productions' recorded in London by the label's A&R man Derek Boland. "Rock the Beat" by Derek B created a demand for British hip-hop; the label signed artists including the Demon Boyz and Daddy Freddy. ''Music Week'' wrote in 1988 that Music of Life was "the most successful hip hop label in the UK right now." ''Record Mirror'' identified Music of Life as one of the few hip hop labels "to believe in home grown talent." In 1989, ''Studio Week'' magazine called Music of Life "the foremost rap label in this country at the moment." Furthermore, in 1989, Music of Life expanded its portfolio with the launch of its sister ...

Mardi Gras Indian
The Mardi Gras Indians (also known as Black Masking Indians or Black Maskers) are African American Carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, known for their elaborate suits and participation in Mardi Gras. The Mardi Gras Indians subculture emerged during the era of slavery from West African, Afro-Caribbean and Native American cultural practices. The Mardi Gras Indians' tradition is considered part of the African diasporan decorative aesthetic, and is an African-American art form. The Mardi Gras Indian tradition developed as a form of cultural resistance when traditional African religions were banned and Black people could not gather in public or wear masks. Their aesthetic serves as an expression of their culture, religion and spirituality. The tradition of "masking" derives from the West African masquerade ceremony, in which an individual takes on the role of a god or spirit. Some Mardi Gras Indians mask as the Native American allies who shielded their ancestors during slavery ...

African bondsmen and bondswomen in the Americas continued this practice over the centuries in various forms of expression—in religious observance; public gatherings; even in children's rhymes; and, most notably, in music in its multiple forms: blues, gospel, rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, hip-hop and go-go. Many work songs sung on plantations by enslaved men and women also incorporate the call and response format. African-American women work s ...
