Badminton At The 1974 British Commonwealth Games
The badminton competition at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games took place in Christchurch, New Zealand from 24 January until 31 January 1974. Paul Whetnall withdrew from the men's singles bronze medal play off and the mixed doubles final due to injury. Prince Charles attended the final day of the badminton competition, and presented the medals for two of the badminton events. It is the home arena of the Canterbury Rams of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL) and the Mainland Pouākai of the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa women's basketball league. It is the former home arena of the Christchurch Cougars of the NZNBL and the Christchurch Sirens of the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL). History Cowles Stadium was constructed by F. W. Matthews, Ltd. Construction began in April 1960 and the stadium opened on 25 September 1961. Cowles Stadium was named in commemoration of William James Cowles, a Christchurch city councilor and sports administrator whose advocacy for an indoor sports stadium led to its construction. Dominic Soong
Dominic Soong Chok Soon (born ) is a former male badminton player. He was a doubles player who played first for Malaysia and later for Canada. Career Dominic Soong came second at the 1973 Southeast Asian Games in the men's doubles with Punch Gunalan. A year later, they jointly won bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
