The Timor Conspiracy
''Death of a Nation: The Timor Conspiracy'' is a 1994 Central Independent Television documentary, written and presented by John Pilger, and directed and produced by David Munro, which documents the involvement of Western governments in the occupation of East Timor in the context of the 1990-91 Gulf War. "Accusations of genocide fly in this disturbing and controversial British documentary," writes Sandra Brennan of Allmovie, as well as, "disturbing accusations regarding the complacency of the U.S., British, and Australian governments who purportedly knew about the killing and did nothing." An updated version of the film entitled ''The Timor Conspiracy'' was released in 1999. Ivor David Munro (1 July 1944 – 5 August 1999)David Boardma ''The Independent'', 12 August 1999 was an English documentary filmmaker. He collaborated on 20 documentary films for television with the Australian-born journalist, John Pilger, with many of their works receiving awards. '' Year Zero: The Silent Death of Cambodia'', their 1979 documentary about the suffering people of Cambodia, resulted in viewers donating more than £45 million in aid. Early life and education His parents were Hugh Munro (an actor and television director) and Pamela Barnard (an actress and later longstanding floor manager in Drama at the BBC). Richard Woolcott
Richard Arthur Woolcott (born 11 June 1927) is a retired Australian public servant, diplomat, author and commentator. Early years Woolcott was educated at Geelong Grammar School, Cranbrook School and the University of Melbourne, before becoming a member of the Australian Diplomatic Service. Woolcott's first posting in the diplomatic service was as Third Secretary in the Australian Embassy Moscow. Woolcott married Danish-born Birgit Christensen in London, England in July 1952 and the couple moved to Moscow shortly after the wedding. During the posting which lasted until 1954, Joseph Stalin died in March 1953. Later career In 1967, Woolcott drafted a speech for Prime Minister Harold Holt that said Australia was geographically part of Asia and that it was "a basic tenet of our national policy to live in friendship and understanding with our Asian neighbours". Mário Alberto Nobre Lopes Soares, GColTE, GCC, GColL (; 7 December 1924 – 7 January 2017) was a Portuguese politician, who served as prime minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985, and subsequently as the 17th president of Portugal from 1986 to 1996. Shirley Shackleton
The Balibo Five was a group of journalists for Australian commercial television networks who were murdered in the period leading up to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. The Balibo Five were based in the town of Balibo in East Timor (then Portuguese Timor), where they were killed on 16 October 1975 during Indonesian incursions before the invasion. Roger East travelled to Balibo soon after to investigate the likely deaths of the Five and was later executed by members of the Indonesian military on the docks of Dili. In 2007, an Australian coroner ruled that they had been deliberately killed by Indonesian special forces soldiers. The official Indonesian version is that the men were killed by cross-fire during the battle for the town. According to ''The Economist'', the Australian Government has never challenged this view in order to avoid damaging relations with Indonesia. Konis Santana
Nino Konis Santana (12 January 1957 in Vero, Tutuala, Lautém District – 11 March 1998 in Ermera District) was an East Timorese freedom fighter who led the Falintil militia between April 1993 and his death in March 1998 during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor, succeeding Ma'huno Bulerek Karathayano after the latter's capture in 1993. Santana died in an accident, after he was shot in the leg during an Indonesian ambush. He was succeeded by Taur Matan Ruak.
