The Iron Crown
''The Iron Crown'' () is a 1941 Italian adventure film written and directed by Alessandro Blasetti, starring Massimo Girotti and Gino Cervi. The narrative revolves a sacred iron crown and a king who is prophesied to lose his kingdom to his nephew. It blends motifs from several European myths, legends and modern works of popular fiction. The film won a Coppa Mussolini award, which is the ancestor to the Golden Lion. Plot Upon the death of Licinio (Massimo Girotti), his brother Sedemondo (Gino Cervi) succeeds him as king of Kindaor. A messenger bearing a crown made from a nail from the true cross requests permission to pass through the kingdom. The crown by legend will stay wherever injustice and corruption prevail. Alessandro Blasetti
Alessandro Blasetti (3 July 1900 – 1 February 1987) was an Italian film director and screenwriter who influenced Italian neorealism with the film ''Four Steps in the Clouds''. Blasetti was one of the leading figures in Italian cinema during the Fascist era. He is sometimes known as the "father of Italian cinema" because of his role in reviving the struggling industry in the late 1920s. Early life Blasetti was born in Rome, where he also died. After studying law at university, Blasetti chose to become a journalist and film critic. He worked for several film magazines and led a campaign for national film production, which had largely ceased by this point. In 1919 he made a brief foray into acting when he appeared as an extra in Mario Caserini's ''Tortured Soul''. Paolo Stoppa
Paolo Stoppa (6 June 1906 – 1 May 1988) was an Italian actor. Biography Paolo Stoppa was born in Rome into a family of a ministerial official, Luigi Stoppa, and Adriana De Antonis. He began as a stage actor in 1927 in the theater in Rome and began acting in films in 1932. From 1938 to 1940, he worked at the Teatro Eliseo, playing characters from the classical and modern repertoire. Stoppa's most celebrated works include those after World War II, when he met director Luchino Visconti: the two, together with Stoppa's wife, actress Rina Morelli, formed a trio whose adaptations of works by authors such as Chekhov, Shakespeare and Goldoni became highly acclaimed. ''The Jester's Supper'' () is a 1942 Italian historical film directed by Alessandro Blasetti and starring Amedeo Nazzari, Osvaldo Valenti and Clara Calamai. It was based on a play of the same title by Sem Benelli, which had later been turned into an opera by Umberto Giordano. Like the play, the film is set in the 15th century Florence of Lorenzo the Magnificent and portrays a rivalry that leads to a series of increasingly violent practical jokes. Production and reception It was shot at Cinecittà in Rome partly using sets that had been constructed for Blasetti's earlier ''The Iron Crown'' which was set in the same era. Amedeo Nazzari, the leading Italian star of the decade, was cast strongly against type. Cinecittà Studios (; Italian for Cinema City) is a large film studio in Rome, Italy. With an area of 400,000 square metres (99 acres), it is the largest film studio in Europe, and is considered the hub of Italian cinema. Giovanna Scotto (born Giovanna Margherita Piana-Canova; 26 August 1895 – 23 December 1985) was an Italian actress and voice actress. Biography Scotto was born in Turin to a theatre company administrator and she made her on-stage debut as a teenager, starting off within the company of Ruggero Ruggeri and Emma Gramatica from 1909 until 1910, then within the company of Armando Falconi and later, Lamberto Picasso. Cesare Polacco (14 May 1900 – 2 March 1986) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Biography Born in Venice, Polacco started his career in 1920 in the stage company of Emilio Zago, with whom he played most of the Goldoni's repertoire. In 1928 he moved to Rome, where in addition to theatre he started appearing in films and working as a dubber. Being of Jewish origin, he was temporarily forced to abandon acting because of the 1938 Fascist racial laws, resuming his activities at the end of the war, in 1945. Also active on radio and television, he got a large popularity thanks to the Inspector Rock character he played in Carosello, in a series of giallo-comedy shorts aired between 1957 and 1968. Lauro Gazzolo (born Ilario Gazzolo; 15 October 1900 – 2 October 1970) was an Italian actor and voice actor.
