''NO EXCUSES: 9 Ways Women Can Change How We Think about Power'' is a nonfiction book by women's rights advocate, feminist and speaker Gloria Feldt released by Seal Press in September 2010. Overview In the book, Feldt encourages women to step into positions of power and leadership. Instead of placing blame, according to the publisher, the author provides inspiration, hope, and courage—as well as concrete power tools, namely, the nine ways, as the book's subtitle eludes—to aid women in securing equality and justice for themselves. The author spoke about her theory of "no excuses" on PBS in an October 2010 interview, telling host Bonnie Erbe, "In so many ways, this is women's moment. Kyle Maynard
Kyle Maynard (born March 24, 1986) is an American speaker, author and mixed martial arts athlete, known for becoming the first quadruple amputee to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro without the aid of prosthetics. He is also founder of the No Excuses Crossfit gym. Early sports career Although he was born with a rare condition known as congenital amputation, where fibrous bands prevent the development of fetal limbs, Maynard decided to pursue involvement in sports, first in youth league football, where he played nose tackle for the Collins Hill National Eagles at age 11. He wrestled in high school, ultimately winning 36 matches in his senior year of high school. He went on to place 12th in the 103-pound weight class. Maynard also began weight training, and was awarded the title of GNC's World's Strongest Teen by bench pressing 23 repetitions of 240 lbs. __NOTOC__ Barrie Colin Keeffe (31 October 1945 – 10 December 2019) was an English dramatist and screenwriter. Best known for his screenplay for the gangster classic, ''The Long Good Friday'' (1980), starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren, Keeffe demonstrated an interest in a variety of social and political issues, including disaffected youth and criminality. Career Born in London, Barrie grew up in Forest Gate, in the east of the city, the son of Edward Keeffe, a telecommunications engineer, and his wife, Constance (née Marsh). His ancestors, the O’Keeffes, had arrived from Cork in the mid-19th century. He had a sister, Sue. Keeffe was educated at East Ham Grammar School. Gregory M. Hodge was the principal for over a decade at The Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) in Harlem, where he was noted for his tough love, "No Excuses" approach. Early life Hodge was raised in Harlem and the Bronx. Orphaned by the age of 16, he recounts to his students a life of homelessness that puts him on a par with their own experiences of poverty. After a counselor "forced" him not to leave school, he earned two Master's degrees and a doctorate. Career Hodge spent 31 years as a New York City school teacher, culminating in his 14-year tenure at FDA that began in 1995 when he replaced the founding principal, Lorraine Monroe.
