Jimmy Wilde
William James Wilde (12 May 1892 – 10 March 1969) was a Welsh professional boxer who competed from 1911 to 1923. He simultaneously held the National Sporting Clubs British flyweight title and the World Flyweight championship from 1916 to 1923. Often regarded as the greatest British fighter of all time, he was the first official world flyweight champion and was rated by American boxing writer Nat Fleischer, as well as many other professionals and fans including former boxer, trainer, manager and promoter Charley "Broadway" Rose, as "the Greatest Flyweight Boxer Ever". Wilde earned various nicknames, such as "The Mighty Atom", "Ghost with the Hammer in His Hand", and "The Tylorstown Terror" due to his bludgeoning punching power. Sydney Wooderson
Sydney Charles Wooderson MBE (30 August 1914 – 21 December 2006), dubbed "The Mighty Atom", was an English athlete whose peak career was in the 1930s and 1940s. He set the world mile record of 4:06.4 at London’s Motspur Park on 28 August 1937. This record stood for nearly five years. Biography Born in Camberwell, London, he was 5 ft 6 in and weighed less than 9 stone (126 lbs). He attended Sutton Valence School, Kent. At 18 he became the first British schoolboy to break 4min 30sec for the mile. He won the British mile title for the five years up to the outbreak of the war in 1939. In 1934 he won the silver medal in the one mile event at the British Empire Games. At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, he suffered an ankle injury and failed to qualify for the 1500 metres final. Joseph L. Greenstein (January 2, 1893 – October 8, 1977), better known as The Mighty Atom, was a 20th-century strongman known for highly unusual feats of strength and endurance. Life and career Early life Greenstein was born to a Jewish family in Suwałki, Poland, in 1893. As a child he suffered from respiratory ailments, and at age 14, a team of doctors predicted he would die from tuberculosis. Around that time, he became acquainted with a Russian circus strongman, Champion Volanko, who mentored Greenstein. Greenstein traveled with Volanko and the Issakoff Brothers Circus for eighteen months, learning the strongman's training regimen. After this, he returned to Poland and married his wife, Leah. Barbara Buttrick (born 3 December 1929), nicknamed "Battling Barbara", is a retired British boxer and a world champion in women's boxing in the 1940s and 1950s. Originally from England, Buttrick is considered a pioneer of women's professional boxing. Professional career Buttrick was born in Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England on 3 December 1929. She became a shorthand typist in an office in the West End of London. Constance Eileen Sheridan ( Shaw, 18 October 1923 – 12 February 2023) was an English cyclist who specialized in time trialing and road record-breaking. She broke all the records of the Women's Road Records Association during the late 1940s and 1950s. They included Land's End to John o' Groats, previously held by Lilian Dredge. Mildred Elizabeth Albert (née Levine; January 14, 1905 – August 26, 1991) was an American fashion commentator, modeling agency director, fashion show producer, radio and television personality, and society columnist. Albert Power SJ (12 November 1870 – 12 October 1948) was a Roman Catholic Jesuit priest, academic and author. He was considered to be one of the best-known Jesuit priests in Australia and had the nickname "The Mighty Atom". Biography Early years Albert Power was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1870. His education started at Belvedere College, Dublin, and continued at Tullabeg College, County Offaly. After Tullabeg College he studied at Milltown Park Theological College, Dublin. ''Astro Boy'', known in Japan as , is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. It was serialized in Kobunsha's ''Shōnen'' from 1952 to 1968. The 112 chapters were collected into 23 volumes by Akita Shoten. Dark Horse Comics published an English translation in 2002. The story follows Astro Boy, an android young boy with human emotions who is created by Umataro Tenma after the recent death of his son Tobio. Eventually, Astro is sold to a robot circus run by Hamegg, but is saved from his servitude by Professor Ochanomizu.
