Li Xianting
Li Xianting (; born 1949 in Jilin) is an independent art critic and curator of contemporary Chinese art in China. After he graduated from Chinese Painting Department, Central Academy of Fine Art in 1978, he became the editor of ''Fine Art Magazine'' until 1983. From 1985 to 1989 he was the editor of the authoritative ''China Fine Art Newspaper'', and was active as independent critic and curator based in Beijing henceforth. In the late seventies and eighties, Li was involved in advocating and introducing the avant-garde art form in China. He organized the "Stars exhibition" in 1979, and coined the terms " cynical realism" and "political pop". Li (surname 栗)
Lì is the pinyin romanization of the Chinese surname written in Chinese character. It is also spelled Leut according to the Cantonese pronunciation. Relatively uncommon, it is not listed in the Song dynasty classic ''Hundred Family Surnames''. Li 栗 is the 249th most common surname in China, with a total population of about 300,000, half of whom live in Henan province. Origins According to traditional accounts, the surname Li 栗 originates from the legendary tribe or state called Lilu (), and the historical state of Li, which has been linked to Lilu. In the third-century text ''Records of Emperors and Kings'' (), Huangfu Mi records the legend that goddess Nüwa enfeoffed thirteen tribes or states, all having the Feng (风) surname. An art critic is a person who is specialized in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating art. Their written critiques or reviews contribute to art criticism and they are published in newspapers, magazines, books, exhibition brochures, and catalogues and on websites. Some of today's art critics use art blogs and other online platforms in order to connect with a wider audience and expand debate. Chinese art is visual art that originated in or is practiced in China, Greater China or by Chinese artists.
