Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection, OCD (born Nicolas Herman; c. 1614 – 12 February 1691) was a French Catholic religious brother who served at a Discalced Carmelite monastery, what is now Saint-Joseph-des-Carmes in Paris. He is best remembered for a posthumous book of his writing, the classic Christian text '' The Practice of the Presence of God''. Biography Brother Lawrence was born Nicolas Herman in Hériménil, near Lunéville in the region of Lorraine, located in modern-day eastern France. His parents were peasants, so his schooling was limited at best. Young Nicholas Herman grew up during the Thirty Years' War, which devastated central Europe between 1618 and 1648. As a young man, Herman's poverty forced him into joining the army, which guaranteed him meals and a small stipend. Lawrence Rocks
The Lawrence Rocks are a group of two rocky islets, 6.8 ha and 1.5 ha in area, with an associated reef, 2.4 km south-east of Point Danger in western Victoria, Australia, and about 6 km south-east of the city of Portland. Geologically, the group is formed from the remnants of an extinct volcano, with the islets composed of basalt and tuff. The islets were sighted by Lieutenant James Grant on 5 December 1800 from the survey brig HMS ''Lady Nelson'' and named for Captain Effingham Lawrence, one of the Elder Brethren of Trinity House. Fauna The rocks are protected as a nature reserve and are the site of a breeding colony of Australasian gannets, the overspill from which led to the establishment of a sister colony at Point Danger. Lawrence is a small town 13 km from Maclean, New South Wales, Australia. It is accessed by the Lawrence car ferry from Woodford Island or by travelling 30 kilometres north from Grafton. At the 2021 census, the population of Lawrence was 925. Settlement The first Irishman into the area was Richard Craig. Craig had escaped from the Moreton Bay convict settlement in 1830. Travelling South Craig had discovered the two big rivers in northern NSW, the Richmond and the Clarence. When he returned to the Port Macquarie penal settlement he revealed the existence of these rivers and was recruited to act as a guide for prospective settlers to the area. The first settlers were cedar-cutters. In 1842 William Robertson took a claim of 15,000 acres centred on the future township of Lawrence and named it "Lanark Lodge" after his childhood home in Scotland.
