1998 World Aquatics Championships
The 8th FINA World Championships or the 1998 World Aquatics Championships were held from 8 to 17 January 1998 in Perth, Western Australia. The championships features competition in all five of FINA's disciplines: Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Synchronised swimming and Open Water Swimming. The main venue for competition was Challenge Stadium, which hosted all disciplines except the Open Water events. Local athlete Michael Klim was named as the leading male swimmer of the meet, winning the 200 m freestyle, 100 m butterfly, 4 × 200 m freestyle, 4 × 100 m medley relay, as well as silver in the 100 m freestyle, 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and bronze in the 50 m freestyle. Ian Thorpe became the youngest ever male to become world champion when he won the 400 m freestyle event aged 15 years and three months. Troy Matthew Dumais (born January 21, 1980) is an American competitive diver from California. Dumais has competed for the United States at four Olympic Games, winning a team bronze medal in the synchronized 3m in 2012. He attended the University of Texas at Austin. Life and career Dumais was raised in a family of divers and swimmers, and in 1994 was named Southern Pacific Association Diver of the Year in his class, as were all his siblings. At the 2000 Summer Olympics, Dumais finished 6th in the men's springboard and 4th in the men's synchronized springboard with David Pichler. Dumais placed 6th in the 2004 Summer Games Men's 3m Synchronized Spring Board with his brother, Justin Dumais. Sun Shuwei (; born February 1, 1976) is a Chinese diver. Sun started diving training in 1984. As a talented athlete, he entered China national diving team in 1989. In 1990, he won the gold medal in the 10 meter platform in Asian Games. In next year, he won gold metals in both Diving World Cup and World Diving Championship. He won the gold medal in the 10 meter platform event at the 1992 Summer Olympics, at only 16 years of age. He suffered from retina disease in 1993, and took a break for a while. In 1994, he returned to the diving pool after surgery, and in Diving World Cup in 1995, he again defeated all the opponents, leading the second by more than 50 points. Jan Hempel (born 21 August 1971) is a German diver who competed at the 1988, 1992, 1996, and the 2000 Summer Olympics, winning two Olympic medals. Hempel won a silver in 10 m Platform and a bronze medal in 10 m synchronized platform. He also competed on the 3m springboard, scoring "the second best dive of all time" in Vienna in 1993. Tian Liang ( zh, c=田亮, p=Tián Liàng; born August 27, 1979) is a Chinese actor and former diving (sport), diver. Diving career Tian won gold in the 10 m platform event in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In the Summer Olympics 2004, he won the bronze medal in the 10 m platform event and a gold medal in the synchronised platform event. Since then, he and another gold medal winner, the Chinese female diver Guo Jingjing, often appeared together in public activities.
