Johannes Zumpe
Johannes (Johann Christoph) Zumpe (pronounced ''zumpy''; 14 June 1726 in Fürth, Free Imperial City of Nuremberg, modern Germany – buried 5 December 1790 in London, UK) was a leading maker of early English square pianos, a form of rectangular piano with a compass of about five octaves. The pianos sounded like mellow harpsichords, and had a damper stop in the left cheek of the case. Zumpe is known as the creator of English square pianos. Biography Of German/Saxon origin, Johnannes Zumpe was born in June 1726. He trained with the Gottfried Silbermann. He was one of the “twelve Apostles”, German makers of keyboard instruments who fled to London at the time of the Seven Years' War. He worked briefly for Burkat Shudi, before setting up his own shop “at the sign of the Golden Guittar” in Princes Street, Hanover Square, in 1761. From 1769 until 24 September 1778, Zumpe was in partnership with Gabriel Buntebart. Meincke Meyer joined Zumpe in 1778. The business was take ... Hermann Zumpe
Hermann Zumpe (9 April 1850 – 4 September 1903) was a German conductor and composer. Born in Oppach, Saxony, Zumpe grew up in Taubenheim in Sohland an der Spree. He was educated at the teachers' seminary at Bautzen, was a schoolmaster at Weigsdorf in Cunewalde from 1870 to 1871, from thence going to Leipzig, and playing the triangle in the municipal theatre there. He was one of those who helped Richard Wagner in the preparation of the ''Ring'' cycle at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in the years 1873 to 1875, and after this he conducted in the theatres of Salzburg, Würzburg, Magdeburg, Frankfurt, and Hamburg (1884 to 1886). In 1891 he went to Stuttgart as ''Hofkapellmeister'', taking over the conductorship of the Society for Classical Church Music, in lieu of Immanuel Faisst, who was ill. In 1895 he became conductor of the Kaim Orchestra (the later Munich Philharmonic, and was made ''Hofkapellmeister'' in Schwerin in 1897. He visited London to conduct Wagner perfo ...
