Zoë Maynard
Zoë Ruth Davis, Lady Maynard ( Cumberbatch; 1926 – 10 December 2018) was an important figure in the Bahamas known for advancing women's rights. Early life In 1926 her parents, surgeon Roland Cumberbatch and musician Meta Davis Cumberbatch, moved from Trinidad to the Bahamas when her father accepted a post from the Colonial Medical Service. She was born Zoë Ruth Davis Cumberbatch the same year. Military service During World War II Maynard, still a teenager, enlisted as a private in the Auxiliary Territorial Service and was stationed in Jamaica. She had numerous duties, including communications. At the time of her death in 2018 she was reported to have been the last living female veteran from the Bahamas. Career and family On 17 January 1947, a little more than a year after the end of the war, she married Clement T. Maynard, the son of a builder and a suffragist. Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau ( ) is the capital and largest city of The Bahamas. It is on the island of New Providence, which had a population of 246,329 in 2010, or just over 70% of the entire population of The Bahamas. As of April 2023, the preliminary results of the 2022 census of The Bahamas reported a population of 296,522 for New Providence, 74.26% of the country's population. Nassau is commonly defined as a primate city, dwarfing all other towns in the country. It is the centre of commerce, education, law, administration, and media of the country. George Padmore
George Padmore (28 June 1903 – 23 September 1959), born Malcolm Ivan Meredith Nurse, was a leading Pan-Africanist, journalist, and author. He left his native Trinidad in 1924 to study medicine in the United States, where he also joined the Communist Party. From there he moved to the Soviet Union, where he was active in the party, and working on African independence movements. He also worked for the party in Germany but left after the rise of Nazism in the 1930s. In 1935, the official foreign policy of the USSR shifted, Britain and France, colonial powers with colonies in Africa, were now referred "democratic-imperialisms", a lower priority than the category of "fascist-imperialist" powers, Germany and Japan. This shift fell into direct contradiction with Padmore's prioritization of African independence, as Germany and Japan had no colonies in Africa. Philip Davis (Bahamian Politician)
Philip Edward "Brave" Davis (born 7 June 1951) is a Bahamian politician serving as the prime minister of the Bahamas since 2021. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cat Island, Rum Cay & San Salvador from 1992 to 1997 and returned to the seat in May 2002, which he still represents. Davis was deputy prime minister to the Rt Hon. Perry Christie and minister of public works and urban development from 2012 to 2017. He then served as leader of the opposition from May 2017 to September 2021, when he led the Progressive Liberal Party to victory and was subsequently sworn in as prime minister. Early life Davis was born in a house off Wulff Road, the eldest of eight children to Dorothy (née Smith), a domestic worker from Alexander, Great Exuma and Brave Edward Davis, a firefighter from Old Bight, Cat Island.
