Zowaa
The Assyrian Democratic Movement (, , ADM), popularly known as Zowaa (), is an Assyrian political party situated in Iraq, and one of the main Assyrian parties within the Iraqi parliament. The Assyrian Democratic Movement states its aims are to establish equal citizenship rights with the rest of the Iraqi people without discrimination on the basis of nationality, belief, religious affiliation, culture, language and other characteristics of the native Assyrians of Iraq, to acknowledge the past massacres committed against them and to ensure they are never repeated again. Yousip Toma
Yousip Toma () was an Assyrian Political activist who would be one of the two founding members of Zowaa, the other being Youbert Shlimon. Early life Yousip was born in 1951 in Kirkuk, His parents came from the village of Blijani in the Dohuk province. He graduated from the University of Sulaymania with a Bachelor's degree in Physics, and later practiced his degree while working as an engineer. Political career His political efforts began in 1970, Yousip was one of the founding members of Zowaa, and held key leadership positions. He was known of his strong personality and high refinement, and participated in putting the ideological line of Zowaa. Youbert Shlimon
Youbert Shlimon () was an Assyrian people, Assyrian political activist who would be one of the two founding members of Assyrian Democratic Movement, Zowaa, the other being Yousip Toma. Early life Youbert was born in 1954 in Habbaniyah, Habbanyiah. He graduated from Baghdad Technical College with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering, Mechanical Engineering and later used his degree while working as an engineer. Political career His political efforts began in 1971 in Baghdad. He was arrested by Ba'athist Iraq, Baathist authorities in Baghdad on 13 July 1984, based on information provided by some traitors within the Assyrian community. While in jail he was subjected to various physical and psychological tortures but still refused to cave-in to his captors' demands of denying his ideals and releasing information on his fellow nationalists. The Athra Alliance (, ) is a political alliance of five political parties in Iraq that represent the Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian people. Kirkuk
Kirkuk (; ; ; ) is a major city in northern Iraq, serving as the capital of the Kirkuk Governorate. The city is home to a diverse population of Kurds, Iraqi Turkmen, Iraqi Turkmens and Arabs. Simele
Simele or Semel (, , Syriac: ܣܡܠܐ) is a town located in the Dohuk province of Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The town is on the main road that connects Kurdistan Region to its neighbor Turkey. It is west of Dohuk. The town had a population of 71,557 in July 2018. Information Simele was populated by Armenian and Assyrian refugees fleeing massacres during Sayfo and the Armenian genocide. During the Simele massacre in 1933, around three thousand Assyrians were massacred prompting many to flee the country as a consequence. The main Assyrian tribe in Simele at the time was Baz. In 2011, the population was mostly Kurdish with a small Assyrian minority of 635 people. Urmia
Urmia (; ) is the largest city in West Azerbaijan Province of Iran. In the Central District of Urmia County, it is capital of the province, the county, and the district. The city is situated near the borders of Iran with Turkey and Iraq. The city lies at an altitude of above sea level along the Shahar River on the Urmia Plain. Abu Ghraib Prison
Abu Ghraib prison (, ''Sijn Abū Ghurayb'') was a prison complex in Abu Ghraib, Iraq, located west of Baghdad. Abu Ghraib prison was opened in the 1960s and served as a maximum-security prison. From the 1970s, the prison was used by Saddam Hussein to hold political prisoners and later the United States to hold Iraqi prisoners. It developed a reputation for torture and extrajudicial killing, and was closed in 2014.
