Zohra (film)
''Zohra'' is a 1922 silent 35 mm short film from Tunisia by Albert Samama ('Chikly'). It was the first indigenous North African film production. The movie script was written by Chikly's daughter, Haydée Chikly, who also edited and starred as the key female protagonist in the film. Plot The plot of the movie evolves around a shipwrecked young French woman, who is rescued by Beduins. She lives with the Beduin tribe for a time. She is later abducted by bandits, but is rescued by a French aviator and reunites with her family. Tribal customs are displayed in detail in the film. The movie is seen as an example of the 'mysterious Orient' genre. Albert Samama Chikly
Albert Samama Chikly (24 January 1872 – December 28, 1934), was a Tunisian filmmaker and photographer. Considered one of the earliest pillars in World Cinema, Albert was a photographer, filmmaker, technophile, adventurer, cyclist and the pioneer of the Seventh Art. Personal life He was born on 24 January 1872 in Tunis, Tunisia to a wealthy Tunisian family with Jewish origin. His father David Samama, was a banker of the Bey who established a banking institution that later become the Bank of Tunisia. His mother was a housewife. Albert continued his studies with Charles Lavigerie and then with the Jesuits in Marseille. He was a traveler that traveled to Cape Horn, China and Australia frequently even at young age. He received his nickname 'Chikli' from the brotherhood of firefighters of the island of Chikly, a small island on Lake Tunis. Haydée Tamzali
Haydée Samama Chikly Tamzali (23 August 1906 – 20 August 1998) was a Tunisian actress, writer, and filmmaker. Early life Haydée Chikly was born in 1906, the daughter of Tunisian Jewish filmmaker Albert Samama Chikly. Her mother was Bianca Ferrero, an Italian-born woman from Savoy. Tamzali's paternal grandfather, David Samama, was a banker of the Bey who established a banking institution that would later become the Bank of Tunisia. Career Haydée Chikly worked with her father from girlhood. He directed her in her first starring role in a short film, ''Zohra'' (1922), written by her, and considered the first fiction film made in Tunisia. They followed this work with another silent drama in 1924, ''Ain el-Ghezal (The Girl from Carthage)'', also starring Haydée Chikly, in a story she wrote "to show how badly women were treated when they were just sold off with an arranged marriage into a man's world." 35 mm film is a film gauge used in filmmaking, and the film standard. In motion pictures that record on film, 35 mm is the most commonly used gauge. The name of the gauge is not a direct measurement, and refers to the nominal width of the 35 mm format photographic film, which consists of strips wide. The standard image exposure length on 35 mm for movies ("single-frame" format) is four perforations per frame along both edges, which results in 16 frames per foot of film. A variety of largely proprietary gauges were devised for the numerous camera and projection systems being developed independently in the late 19th century and early 20th century, as well as a variety of film feeding systems. The Bedouin, Beduin, or Bedu (; , singular ) are nomadic Arab tribes who have historically inhabited the desert regions in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. Silent Films
A silent film is a film with no synchronized Sound recording and reproduction, recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of intertitle, title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a piano, pianist, theatre organ, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films.
