Zilpher Jennings
Zilpher Margaret Jennings Reed (13 June 1928 – 13 August 1961) was an American Samoan politician. In 1953 she was one of the first two women elected to the Fono, when she won a seat in the House of Representatives. She began working in the administration department of the American Samoan government, and married Fritz John Reed, with whom she had two sons in 1956 and 1958. In the 1953 legislative elections, she was elected to the House of Representatives from Swains Island, one of two women elected to the House alongside Mabel Reid. She died in 1961. Swains Island
Swains Island (; Tokelauan: ''Olohega'' ; Samoan: ''Olosega'' ) is a remote coral atoll in the Tokelau Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. The island is the subject of an ongoing territorial dispute between Tokelau and the United States, which has administered it as part of American Samoa since 1925. Privately owned by the family of Eli Hutchinson Jennings since 1856, Swains Island was used as a copra plantation until 1967. The American Samoa Fono is the territorial legislature of American Samoa. Like most states and territorial legislatures of the United States, it is a bicameral legislature with a House of Representatives and a Senate. The legislature is located in Fagatogo along Pago Pago harbor. It is the only legislature on the state or territorial level in the United States that is both bicameral and nonpartisan. The Nebraska Legislature is similarly nonpartisan yet is a unicameral body. History American Samoa became a United States territory in 1900 and was initially administered by the Navy.
